Maybe I misunderstood but this subject of a nuclear attack upon the East Coast was related to a new sub the Russians had just launched with a capability of nuclear torpedoes not missiles with an air blast?

Quote:

A Russian Navy submarine armed with a strategic nuclear torpedo the size of a school bus was delivered to the Kremlin this week, according to an announcement from the shipyard.

Project 09852 Belgorod is based on a Russian Oscar-class guided-cruise missile submarine that has been altered to accommodate six 80-foot Poseidon nuclear torpedoes that could be armed with a warhead of up to 100 megatons, USNI News previously reported.

The submarine was delivered to the Russian Navy in a ceremony in at the Northern Fleet's headquarters in Severodvinsk on Friday,

US Army Ordnance Center and School Chemical, Biological and Radiological Warfare disaster management course.

The pressure/blast waves from multiple air burst detonations will likely take out a lot of buildings, and we don't have a real world example of what this looks like with multiple warheads. NYC will be the last place on earth I would want to be in the event of a nuclear attack on the mainland US. HTH.

Edit: the silliness of this approach also ignores the magnitude of casualties: people with severe radiation burns, trauma from debris/over pressure from blast waves dying a slow death with almost zero prospects of living long. Saying "you got this" trivializes the most traumatic event imaginable: an event with almost no possibility of escape or expectation of survival.
Here's a blast radius map to give you some idea of the destruction that results from a single bomb:

The Russkies won't be lobbing Hiroshima size nukes (15 or 20 Kilo Tons). More likely in the several hundred Kilo to low Mega Ton range. If you live anywhere near an impact site, going inside and listening to the radio won't do much for your survival odds. Don't want to be anywhere near a hell scape like that.

Again, the recent threat is not an air blast type of weapon. Unless the definition of a torpedo has changed recently.

If any group had a nuke and wanted to hit the US with it, hitting Washington DC during a presidential address to a joint session of congress would be the biggest bang for your buck. This would also take out the entire Supreme Court and Joint Chiefs of staff; effectively decapitating all three branches of government and our military leadership in one stroke.

With our luck, AOC would be the designated survivor that time.

The PSA should be...

In case of nuclear attack, go outside and get as close to the blast as you can and pray you will die instantly, because there is no way in hell you want to survive and live with the aftermath.

If they will be using nuclear torpedoes, the blast will be underwater and underground. Manhattan as an island would have most of the buildings collapsing as the soil beneath them liquifies, correct?

I choose to keep positive about this. Think about all the problems NYC wouldn't have to solve if that happened.

Hmm. I read somewhere that a third of the people will be killed in the world. A third of the trees will be burned up. Water would be poisoned, and a city would be destroyed and people asking who they would trade with now. Things are becoming a little more clear every day.

That's hilarious. If you are in NYC and a nuke hits, you better just hope you die immediately.

The irony is in current conditions, that might leave a more dangerous America for them to confront. The middle officer ranks left in charge would be more ruthless and any people not totally done in would make post Pearl Harbor look like just being annoyed. Because at a stroke you would have removed much of what is running down the national spirit currently. Its very different time from earlier decades. Now, in some ways, it could be their worst mistake. By the same token the disappearance of the NY msm is in the same vein.

There can be very unexpected and unintended consequences in war, no matter how clever you think you have planned starting it. It might go that way for our enemies.

I assume this is tongue in cheek, it's the tip of a legit issue: society is only ever a few meals away from total collapse. Without electronics mass starvation is imminent. It's best to either die in the first blast or be in a remote location with diverse & established agriculture (or fishing).

Yeah, Russia is going to nuke us because we have a "weak President". Lmao.

Putin is just pissy because he got embarrassed by Joe Biden of all people and one of the most corrupt countries in Europe.

Am I worried about being in NYC? Absolutely not. Would I be worried if I was on our family farm in the central US? Absolutely! Here I'm vaporized, on the farm I die from radiation poisoning from a cobalt bomb.

But with my luck I'll be in the 2nd ave subway and be crushed to death 50ft under ground.

Those desks from the 70s must have been incredibly well made. They would protect us from tornados, nuclear explosions, you name it!

Actually, the desks went through a change in late 60s as mobile classrooms started to be placed in schools for overflow students. More plastic or lightweight aluminum. Earlier desks were heavy with metal bases. you could push and slide them but a kid was not picking them up.

when the Ukraine war first kicked off I took a trip down memory lane.

I rewatched the 1983 movie "The Day After"

walks through what happens in a global thermal nuclear war. it is awesome - you can watch the entire movie on youtube
