I am very sorry you were attacked by thugs. It is a terrible situation that could have been tragically worse. We live in violent times, and evil people are increasingly inflicting their criminal aggression upon innocent victims.

It may have been a blessing that you were not yet armed. Being attacked from behind by multiple assailants and the shock and pain of being struck viciously in the face would very likely have prevented you from using your gun to defend yourself, and they may have seen it and used it against you.

It is terribly unfortunate and very maddening when good people like you are targeted and injured by violent thieves. I will add you to my prayer list, asking for your swift, complete recovery and future safety.

It has been interesting to see your transition from rational liberal to possible conservative, your journey to the dark side is almost complete. I fully support good people arming themselves. However as others have already stated, it doesn't sound like it would have helped in this situation and may have put you in more danger if they stole it or used it. The only way to avoid an ambush like that is situational awareness and even then you cannot prepare for everything.

For some reason I feel like dollar stores may not be located in the safest areas.

I am very sorry to hear this happened to you but I am glad to hear you are relatively okay, as this could have been much worse. Your story is a good PSA for us all to be more vigilant of our surroundings and avoid being in harm's way.

Situational awareness is your best form of self defense. Criminals are predators and look for weaknesses in potential victims. They target you just like a lion does it's prey. Pay attention to your surroundings especially when exiting stores or walking in parking lots. Pause a second when exiting a store, restaurant etc and scan the parking lot. Note anyone who is just hanging out or sitting in a car. Also watch for vehicles just circling the parking lot. If necessary take another route. Don't be afraid to turn around and go back inside and if necessary ask management for an escort to your vehicle.

Too many folks are oblivious to their surroundings and most have their head buried in their phone. Stay off your phone, keep your head up and look folks in the eye. And that doesn't mean give them the Clint Eastwood gunfighter stare. Just a quick glance to let them know you are aware of their presence. You can even give them a quick smile. What a novel act in todays society right?

Be especially careful as you get further out in the parking lot and near your vehicle. Ever watch people load groceries in their car? Complete lack of situational awareness. Especially if they have kids in tow. With inflation and the lack of consequences for shoplifting and other crimes, we can expect to see more of this.

Sorry this had to happen. Let this be a learning experience for everyone here. If any good can come from it, it just may save someone else from experiencing the same thing that could have had a much worse ending.

In 1995, the wife and I were mugged at gunpoint in Houston by a black man in a satin Houston Oilers jacket. It's hard to forget; not a great day. Told co-workers about the incident and they very callously said, "welcome to Houston".

I felt helpless in the moment. After the incident, I was ready to go thug hunting. It's a real and very uncomfortable violation of the psyche.

I'm terribly sorry you experienced this, Tanya. Take your time. Heal up. Get some therapy if you need help processing it. No shame in it. Glad you're still here posting with us.

It seems so scary out there right now. Criminals are emboldened and I wonder when/if that will change, but I really hope it does soon.

I hope getting your CHL will make you feel better. I don't carry but I do have an alarm and some mace on my keychain. Your story encourages me to be even more aware of my surroundings. I hate feeling like I need to be suspicious of everyone I see, but we really have to be these days.

As GAC06 said, This is very important. Most self defense shootings occur with less than 10' almost 99%. Ideally you would be 21' or greater. This being a fact unarmed combatives training should go hand in hand with firearms practice, as a weapon within arms reach is of equal value to both parties. Find quality instruction on this that actually forces you to get physical. They are hard to find and its nasty painful training, that will strengthen your awareness to avoid such a bad position.

If you feel threatened that a weapon is coming out the time to go is NOW.

Never stop Breathing.
1. Control the position.
2. Control the weapon
3. Inflict damage at every opportunity.

Also realize that from my experience women are VERY resistant to carrying on the body. So they end up carrying in purses(hopefully at least designed for it).

That means when suckered punched from behind the gun is now possessed by the attacker. So important to be aware of your surroundings.

My wife won't carry on body either and it's very frustrating. Get training(even classes that aren't about firearms) and think about all these things.
