I keep reading about how formula has "nutrients" that are key ingredients that help babies.

What exactly are these "Nutrients"?

You cant just go to a store and ask for nutrients. Might be good to know what they heck they are…

Can confirm. 11 lbs. of fruity cereal flavor, 11 lbs. of birthday cake. I regret not buying a 3rd bag.

So the homemade formula recipe using watered down evaporated milk and corn syrup probably isn't too far off from the powdered stuff.

Even though this has been beaten to death already...

Pretty much all the same nutrients every person needs and gets through eating food that babies can't. It is not that they need something specific that you don't, it is that their bodies cannot process solid food and they cannot tolerate nutrient or electrolyte imbalances like you can.

As an example, infants can't drink cow's milk because it contains proteins, vitamins, and minerals in the wrong balance. Their kidneys can't haven't all of the proteins and minerals in the milk, but it also lacks the necessary amounts of vitamin C and iron, among others. Giving an infant under 6 months cow's milk could cause severe illness.

As another, infants don't drink water. Drinking even small amounts can cause dangerous electrolyte imbalances. Even if they're dehydrated, they're only supposed to receive milk or formula.

It's like putting gas in your car. Your car is specifically made to run on gasoline. If you put diesel on, you're going to have a bad day. They're very similar and do many of the same things, but they are not interchangeable. Infants bodies can only run on breast milk or formula because it approximates breast milk closely enough. You can't just give them something else to give them nutrients, vitamins, and minerals.

Except it is because evaporated milk is still cow's milk, just with much of the water removed. ALL of those other words and numbers are the important parts.

There are several options that avoid the corn syrup solids and have lactose, milk and oils among the main ingredients.

My wife beat the options up as we had to start shopping around as our newborn started eating more than she can produce.

For those lurking that need formula - cvs hides formula behind the counter - ask them about their supply, and we found no shortage at natural grocers - they just stock less since it's a specialty store.

You know... babies don't know one breast from another...

Yeah, man.

[sarcasm] "Nutrients" sounds fishy to me too. What are they? Is there any scientific evidence of these so-called "nutrients" even existing? And why is the government keeping these "nutrients" from the public? Shouldn't there be some sort of regulation requiring these "nutrients" to be listed with mathematical precision on every packaged food item sold in the country? [/sarcasm]

This is very true. My grandmother's mom died shortly after giving birth to her. The lady at the next farm over was still nursing her own baby and so she became my grandmothers "wet nurse". I'm very thankful for that lady. So are my kids.

Those regulations are what's keeping baby formula from entering Wurope and helping with the crisis. Good work. This is what happens when you've never worked a real job before.

Big govt overlords here to help.

Bury largest factory with miles and miles of red tape. Keep protectionist legislation in place to prevent imports. parade out "experts" to warn of the dangers of a 60+ year old recipe produced by one of the countries leading baby food manufacturers.

But hey, ONE plane load of formula form Switzerland is on the way!

The problem with the homemade versions has to do with getting enough vitamins but not having too much protein. So it is watered down to reduce the protein levels. But the babies do not get enough calories from watered down milk and they piss more often which can lead to dehydration.

The government failed spectacularly concerning formula plants and everyone involved should be voted out this November and in 2024

I was kind of surprised by the level of iron in some of these formulas. You can smell it. Guessing beast milk has a lot of iron?

No way. And neither do some of these "if only there was another way to feed your kids" smartasses. To be fair, when I was younger and dumber, I didn't know anything about breastfeeding either.

Not really.

For the first 6-9months infants mostly process the iron stored up in them during the last trimester

After 6-9 months, it is recommended they are given iron enriched foods or formula.

One of the reasons things like baby cereal have significant amounts of iron.

As an FYI, half of the infant formula in the U.S. is consumed by welfare recipients.

See first paragraph of article.

Sorry if I digressed from OP's intent of having a magic ingredients thread.

Why can't we discuss this if we don't have kids? We get it; the parent's on here have better perspective, but the rest of us are allowed to discuss this issue and question things.

It is more about the condescension from many of the childless combined with the arrogance that many have on how truly few people need formula because the mother should try harder

Yes, but I couldn't help but laugh at a parent's response to one of these smartasses in another thread with:

"It doesn't work that way."

Yes, actually it literally works that way. That's what boobs are literally for - to produce milk. The default position is that boobs produce milk for your newborn. The exception is that you have some issue that either keeps you from producing enough or not at all.

If that exception is now the norm in this country, then we have a major f'ing problem within female humanity in this country and a much larger issue than a supply chain breakage.

I would assume "it doesn't work that way" was in response to someone asking why a woman doesn't just switch back to breast feeding to get through this crisis. As soon as you even start supplementing with formula your production is compromised and it's very likely irreversible. If you quit feeding or pumping even just for a short time, it's toast.

Now if you are saying that more women should breastfeed, I don't think anyone would argue with that, but that's a diff argument imo.

And part of the problem is the different roles women have adopted in the last few decades. Much easier to long haul breastfeed when you're a stay at home mother and not working a busy schedule. It is a very big and difficult commitment for a working woman and I have tremendous respect for those who are able to pull it off for the first year. I would never imply that these women are lazy or careless if it just becomes too much for them after a few months.
