Had an interesting conversation with my daughter (who works for Discovery) regarding a recent Town Hall meeting for the new Warner/Discovery team.
The town hall meeting was held after the merger was finalized, and was hosted by Oprah Winfrey, who posed questions to David Zaslav (he previously was the CEO of Discovery), but is now the CEO for the combined companies.
My daughter has been on several Town Hall meetings hosted by Zaslav, but this was the first one for the combined operations. Normally erudite and quite affable, he was more straight to the point and deliberate. He said the company now has a boat-load of debt, and that business units have to be profitable. One thing I didn't realize, while both are Media companies, their businesses are polar opposites. Warner owns and operates film production operations, Discovery markets reality series (which don't require large budgets).
I didn't get into my opinions about CNN+, but she was adamant that it has to be profitable given the structure she's used to at Discovery.
