They needed something like over 2 million subscribers in the first year, and that's a conservative estimate. They sunk so much freaking money into this thing it's unreal.

They ended up with around 10,000 subscribers and had to slash monthly fees in half to get that.

The CNN article on this is buried down their website. It is co-authored by Brian Stelter and they are in complete denial mode about the true reasons for cancellation. They are still claiming the launch was wildly successful. This was all just a result of the merger with Discovery and different visions for digital content moving forward.

Hmmmm, I wonder what those 5 triple masked people who have not left their house since March of 2020 and are still spraying Lysol on all their groceries and other deliveries are going to watch on TV now?

I still go to the website, sometimes to get a little news and sometimes to laugh at the opinion pieces (Jill Filipovic in particular). They started putting stuff that was always a free click behind a CNN+ paywall. I wonder how long that will last.

I remember watching CNN's Headline News with Lynn Russell, that was a good CNN telecast.
Half-hour rewind of the top stories of the day.
She was there for almost 20 years!

I would really love to see the market research that led them to believe a meaningful number of people were prepared to start paying directly to watch more CNN content. Let alone enough to justify throwing a quarter of a billion dollars at it.

Air America was by no means a successful venture and it was vastly more successful than CNN+. It was around for years.

I think the heads that should roll are no longer involved or employed...this was created when still under AT&T leadership.
I thought ATT still owned it, amongst the rest of their $150 billion in debt.

Well, wonder what Warner was thinking to buy that cow pie?

Discovery purchased WarnerMedia from AT&T.

WarnerMedia owns tons of entities including WB, DC, HBO, CNN, TNT/TBS etc.

So once Discovery got full control (less than 2 weeks ago), first order of business was apparently cutting CNN+ out.

As for CNN's cable channel...it'll be interesting to see what if any changes are made now that Chris Licht is in place.
Initially, he has said he wants CNN to be a news first (meaning less editorialist) channel. I'm guessing he's thinking there is a market in the middle between MSNBC and FNC. Nothing really to lose and it makes sense if they actually do it.

The problem is there aren't enough important straight news stories to fill up 24-7-365 programming, so all the news channels have to fill time with opinion shows and even their straight news programming often involves bringing in a couple of pundits to squabble with each other about a story after the anchor presents it.

And heaven forbid it's an ongoing event where you get one little piece of information at a time and then spend 20 minutes with a panel of people who sit there musing about that one piece of information and how it might be significant until some new fact comes in to start the process over.

Yeah, I don't see how it can be successful unless they completely diversify their content. IOW, show news related programming at set times during the day interspersed with completely different, non-news driven programming.

Go buy out some shows on other networks and pull them over. My god the amount of programming out there on random channels throughout the day is almost limitless. I'm not sure who all watches all of it or how it's paid for.

This whole affair sounds like the events of the 2011 movie Margin Call where a bunch of assets were promoted and sold to another company that then bought them only to find out that assets hand no real value left.

The asset was Chris Wallace.

Bunk is spot on. AT&T sold their media business to Discovery. Ironically, Discovery is in charge of the new company (in spite of the new corporate name) and the former shareholders of AT&T own the majority of the company.

My youngest daughter works for Discovery and is based out of their Knoxville office. It seems that everyone of them (in their United States offices) are flaming liberals (as is my daughter, though she's part of the team headquartered in Poland and reports to a woman who I feel is a bit more right of center). Yet one would never know it given they are responsible for HGTV, The Food Network, and others, such as the Magnolia Network (which used to be DIY). There are subtle elements, but look at Magnolia. They've allowed Chip and Joanna to do their thing and preserve their conservatism. In a sense, I feel that Discovery is more about the programming to the general public than the stuff that was going on at CNN+. Though I have no insight, I strongly believe the end of CNN+ was made by Discovery executives.

One last thing...best darn corporate cafeteria I've ever experienced as it's run by the folks from The Food Network.

Olbermann is straight up nuts. Just a whack job.

Wallace is an arrogant pryck.

But, they deserve each other.

I din't know who he was.

Big believer in the powers of innovation, empathy and great storytelling. Former WarnerMedia CEO. Hulu founding CEO. Tar Heel. Proud product of the Burgh.

That entire thread he just keeps doubling down on how wonderful it will be. Acting like it's the second coming. Just hilarious.

Let's just say there is demand for live streaming news content, but not opinion. A place for people to go for live breaking news just like CNN was during its early days. I'm not convinced that demand exists, but even if it does CNN has run its name into the ground.

Given the proliferation of "news" on the internet, I don't think the demand exists for live news streaming (or "news entertainment" as its become). For one thing, older people (like my parents) who watch a lot of news, do so still on their cable/sat package and they aren't going to go to streaming.

The only possible exception is an extremely conservative service, but I still don't see what would differentiate it from websites that have video streaming already.
