Lots of griping about equal pay, respect, etc, from the press about the WNBA and women's soccer teams.

But somehow - any outrage for differing pay for women's golf is - silent. Is there something (d)ifferent about women's professional golf?

Top finishers from this last weekend' tournament.

Here are the two US top 10 finishers.

To 10 indeed wbt...

I don't know, but IMHO women golfers are earners. I think, much like women tennis players they gripe less and just DO IT.

The second American, Rich O'Toole, is an Aggie also.

Men continue to dominate women's sports.

Think he will sound different for There's a Spirit now that he transitioned?

They do talk about it. They just got some big deal to pay them more. But most pro golfers arent making huge money like other professional athletes.

I think golfers are much more independent business people as well. Not the same mentality. Also, more college graduates in golf.

Why? Divorced?

When I surf the Golf Chanel and see a LPGA tournament, there is seldom an American to be found in contention to win. My interest is not piqued.

#100 on money list last year earned $1.3M in prize money. Throw in maybe a couple hundred thousand for avg tour pro's for endorsements.

#100 on money list for LPGA was $128K. Talk about pay disparity!

If you look at the money list for 2022, the top 5 consists of 3 Americans:

Jennifer Kupcho

Danielle Kang

Jessica Korda

I saw something that said Scottie Scheffler's caddie has earned more than the highest earning womens golfer this year. But it is what it is.

If he's getting 10% of Scheffler's earnings then he's already made over $1M. Kupcho leads LPGA tour with $800K in earnings this year so far

I was going to say, how unfair....but then I realized I can't remember the last time I watched single hole of women's professional golf. Men's I've watched the last two weeks.

Scheffler's on a historic run so far this year. Last year's top earner on PGA was Jon Rahm and he only made $7.7M for the entire year. Top earner on LPGA last year came in at $3.5M so the disparity at the top wasn't so great.

There is talk about the difference in prize money among women golfers. Chevron has signed on as sponsor of what formerly was the ANA Inspiration and is moving it from California to Houston. They'll pay the largest purse in LPGA history. Looking forward to watching them. They would obliterate all but the very best men. None of that means I believe they deserve equal pay. They deserve what the market will pay.

Get back to me about pay "equity" when the ladies tennis major tourneys go best 3 out of 5 sets and the LPGA plays from the tips.
jja79
How long do you want to ignore this user?
AG
Why would it matter if they play the tips? They're women which doesn't mean they aren't really good. I'm a member at one of the clubs being considered for the Chevron so a few LPGA players have been checking it out and they are fabulous players. None of that means the prize money should be equal unless the market demands it.

Asking because I don't follow golf. How big is the disparity between men and women relative to other sports?
akm91
How long do you want to ignore this user?

It's significant. The #100 player on PGA tour (298 yds) still outdrives the #1 player on LPGA tour (284 yds) by 14 yds.

The #1 player on LPGA tour would land at #193 on PGA tour for avg driving distance.

Avg course length for PGA ~ 7200 yds
Avg course length for LPGA ~ 6400 yds

Yes, the best men in the world. They would obliterate 99.9% of the rest of men.

That said the market hasn't proven the demand for the product to the extent it needs to be for purses to get larger.

Thanks. I assumed there would be a disparity in max range. I just didn't know if range was the defining attribute in achieving lower scores. I could imagine women with a (relatively) weaker driving game partially compensating with a good midrange and putting game.

Some LPGA players have been playing at my club lately as it's in the running for the Chevron championship. One of my friends who is a scratch player played with some of them a couple of weeks ago and go taken to the woodshed. He out drove them but he said when they got an iron or wedge in their hands they just stuffed it close.
