I will never buy an electric powered vehicle.

I don't know. Ask Chevrolet who has had electronic door handles on the Vette since 2003 and I believe the SSR also had them. Funny how these articles about them being death traps never appear. Other cars have had them as well.

Could it be because it is a very rare event and if it was a traditional car, know one would click on the story? If you are so concerned about being unable to get out of a car when the electricity system fails, why shouldn't we also go back to manual windows because then you have another escape route if the manual door mechanism fails (which they do)?

I theorize they must see the fancy electronic mechanisms as a selling point, and plausibly to reduce the weight of the door/vehicle by a couple pounds. To me it's an example of poor/over-engineering, but EV buyers tend not to worry about that so the marketing probably outweighs it.
I do not know much about Rivian but they do not have a manual door handle inside? Tesla has a manual one and if a driver doesn't know where it is, then isn't that the driver's fault? I know where it is but never use it because I don't have a need for it.

Could also be since GM has been doing it longer they know how to build better.

Yep, if it's one thing GM is known for it's their impeccable quality.

Rear child lock on my F-150 is busted and the door won't open from the inside. Won't someone think of the children?

Absolutely because the first gneration of a technology is always the most reliable. The manual door release mechanism was no as easy to reach as the Tesla's mechanism since it is on the floor and is a recessed, thin lever.

Obvious to anyone that pays attention. $41,000. Base price <$30,000. 10-80% in 11 minutes. Any union labor company is pretty screwed vs. non-union. Rivian just screwed themselves.

18 months paper to production in China.

Sure. If you're drunk/stoned enough it even looks like a Porsche. But wait, there's more. A lot more. Paint peeling within days, no mechanical door release, reliability, self-driving crashes, and more!

Carbike360 Says

The litany of issues plaguing the Xiaomi SU7 underscores the importance of prioritising safety and quality in automotive design. As consumers voice their concerns and regulatory bodies scrutinise its performance, Xiaomi faces a pivotal moment in rectifying these shortcomings and restoring trust in its brand.
All from a Chinese communist concern that…is known for being a cheapo phone option in places like India/China, with just a few problems like overheating. But that can be avoided by not talking on it for 40 minutes or longer.

Quote:

You can fix the Xiaomi phone problems if you can avoid the following:
  • Don't do cellular phone calls for more than 40 minutes
  • Don't play a graphic-intensive game such as PUBG mobile constantly for more than 20-30 minutes; take a break in between, and then start playing again
  • Avoid using multiple apps at the same time. Don't do multitasking as it heats up the phone pretty fast
  • Avoid constantly watching videos or listening to music for more than 40 minutes
  • Also, try not to constantly capture videos and pictures with your phone, especially on a hot, sunny day.

That sounds like a great company to provide a possibly deadly BEV for my family because it is cheaper than…other options. It's not surprising some unknown interwebs person who looks a bit like a youngish algore (who served in Vietnam and Cambodia oh by the way) would make a fanboy video about their latest EV, but it is a bit surprising a college educated American would fall for it.

Well that's not a problem according to everyone on here you don't need mechanical door latches to escape a burning car. If you can't figure out the hidden top secret latch no one tells you about and takes firefighters 45 minutes to find, you're just stupid according to some posters.

Focusing on finishing/minor design decisions rather than the fact that 10 years ago that vehicle would be minimally a $70,000+ expense from a cost of components standpoint.

"Minor?" Just look around the interweb, don't take my word/link for it.

And in 1998 gas was $1.08 a gallon. Neither are relevant to thinking that 'company' produces anything but garbage. We can compare the price of cheapo cars in India too, but it's not pertinent at all.

You're looking at it as "Xiaomi car." Rather than cost down in EVs. Might as well be a BYD or a Tesla. They are all in that price range. It's like if I said that ICE vehicles suck, because Toyota makes vehicles with engines that explode.

The point is they couldn't even build a ****ty EV at $40,000 10 years ago. I'll also point out that 6 years ago people were saying the exact same thing about Tesla and now they have the highest volume selling vehicle in the world.

It's not my standard. It's the standard of the broader market. That's the point. I'm not arguing that YOU are going to buy that vehicle, but rather that the norm consumer would be eager to. Especially as the price falls another $5,000 for every trim level over the next 5 years.

I'll also point out that your article is from <1 month after the first deliveries (likely <5,000 cars in the wild by the time it was written) of that car were performed so what they're doing is more propaganda than actual information derived from a rivalry between India and China.

Rather than a random website no one has ever heard of, written by a guy in India that had likely never seen the vehicle in person when he "wrote" that article, the video I posted is from (probably) the largest EV reviewer in the world who has extensive experience with Tesla (Owns Cybertruck/Model 3 Performance), Porsche (Mom drives a Porsche Maycan), Hyundai, Kia, Audi (girl in the video drives an Audi EV), Lucid. Basically every major car brand and he's saying the build quality is at minimum acceptable if not good.

Who is defending to defend? The person that actually watched the hour long review of the vehicle, or the person that watched the first minute and a half of the video, dipped out of it and went to DuckDuckGo to search "Problems with Xiaomi SU7" found an article written by a random blogger in the middle of India that has likely never even seen the vehicle in person, that he (Nortex) has never even heard of before, and posted it here as if it was a real representation of the vehicle?

Ever heard of CarBike360? Of course not, because it reviews cars for the India market and has absolutely no traffic.

Xiaomi is not a reputable company, nor is the vehicle actually anything approaching what was posted. Their phones and appliances, like their cars, are basically cheapo garbage.

Trying to be clever with the nomenclature even with reference to Porsche, it's really absurd to consider this a groundbreaking vehicle at all. Suspension breakage, battery fires, entertainment system failures, build flaws, you name it. It's just not a good company, period.

You're more than welcome to keep defending it as a groundbreaking vehicle, I don't care, but it's not hard for most of us to find that…this is not a real market threatening model/company. I frankly don't think it's even fair to use this garbage as a broad brush strike against BEV's period, but consider it an outlier in terms of something I hope more Americans don't get suckered into buying down the road.

Wouldn't call referencing a website no one has ever heard of and a YouTube channel that literally profits off of posting negative information about China "killing it." Meanwhile a prominent YouTube review channel that is hyper critical of everything he reviews (rips aspects of Rivian, Tesla, Porsche, etc.) says it's a well made car and the CEO of a company that is in direct competition with it says it's great after spending 6 months with it.

But your media literacy is in negative territory so it's not surprising that you have that impression.
