And in the event a better methodology for controls comes about? Why even invest in it if you have to fight regulators before it even can be put in a car?

It's overblown. It's nanny state stuff. If you can't handle touchscreen controls don't buy a touch screen car, but as the population ages the proportion of people that can't will fall. And if it doesn't? Auto manufacturers will adapt and add back in physical controls. My guess is that the controls will shift to the steering wheel as steer by wire gets adopted.

With EU style regulation we'd still be using dip**** microUSB and Type A style connectors because Apple would have been forced to adopt the USB consortiums port rather than developing the Lightning connector, which forced USB to develop the Type-C connector.

With EU style regulation EVs would be using a suboptimal CCS connector rather than Tesla's NACS connector that's much smaller and easier to handle for smaller individuals.

Regulation is bad. Restriction is bad. It stifles innovation.

At least he/she/zir is getting drug in the comments at the bottom of that article. What a nitwit, EVs are maybe more fun than most automatic transmission cars but they'll never be as fun as stick shift cars. It's all about preference though, and those that prefer EVs seem hellbent on extinguishing everyone else's preferences. That's what I can't stand about the EV fanatic crowd. Let me buy what I want and you're free to buy what you want. Everyone is happy, but no, they choose the route of tyranny at every opportunity.

The truck with the largest battery pack and faster charging rate wins (Silverado WT). 500 miles over the mountain pass (twice) with one stop. Didn't watch the whole video to see how long the stop was. 1/2 ton truck electrification should stop at either being a plug-in hybrid or series hybrid (Ramcharger).

They make sense for in town fleet use from a utility perspective. The problem is they are way too expensive for their utility.

I realized after I posted that it should have been worded, if they are going to force all 1/2 ton trucks to be electrified, then plug-in hybrid and/or series hybrid should at least be options for consumers to choose from along with BEV.

silverado, rivian, lightning, cybertruck finished 1, 2, 3, 4 in that mountain towing race.

sounds like the silverado has the largest battery pack.

on another note, as one who just months ago would have thought I'd never buy an electric powered vehicle, as mentioned earlier on this thread, i made the mistake of test driving a Rivian last month and holy crap it was awesome and I bought one. I got mine in today. Of course it's only day 1 and still a very risky way for me to splurge and spend that kind of cash on myself, but it's pretty Fing awesome now that I have mine. Considering that replacing my platinum F-150 with a new platinum F-150 would have cost almost as much, I think I'm going to be very happy with this.

Trucks for people that tow are the primary use case where I can say that the time between present day and their viability as a fully electric platform is long enough away that it makes sense for companies to invest in it. The time horizon for all other vehicle types is short enough that I think they're ultimately not going to have a long enough use case that it will reap rewards.

Unrelated:
Sodium Ion Batteries are coming and the U.S. has all of the resources domestically to be a world power for them. Long term range demands will rise and then fall as charging infrastructure proliferates (less miles between charging stations) and charge rates fall. This video suggests that a sodium ion battery will be capable of 10-15C charging/<6 minute charge times. Buy heap car with 200 miles of range and charge in 6 minutes every 3 hours of driving. Sodium Ion should be half the cost of nickel based lithium batteries, and 70% the cost of LFP. Ideal deployment in the short term is grid storage.

Battery swaps appear to be getting easier with companies moving towards structural packs. Market will probably eventually end up with third party producers of packs suitable for replacement with third party installers driving the cost of replacement down.

The Rivian R1T would be my choice out of the current BEV trucks. Best interior and nice extra details that are useful (gear tunnel, portable speaker, flashlight, the towing info on center screen, etc.). Wish the standard battery pack that just released was LFP.

It does look pretty cute but I would always be nervous about being tapped in DFW traffic by some reckless driver and then not able to get it repaired for 5+ months.

That is one amazing study given it says EVs burn through brake pads quickly. 150k and pads are at 70% since most breaking is done by the motor and not the pads. My Vette burned through a set in 55k.

I've gone through a set of tires in 15k miles before when I had my Challenger, but 6k for a set of tires is pretty bad!

Nobody Told EV Owners How Quickly They Burn Through Tires

Quote:

Now, big-name OEMs like Michelin and Goodyear sell rubber specifically for battery-powered cars. Marketing is one reason, of course, but so are the legitimately different requirements of EV tires. They must strike a different balance of strength, weight, and resiliency without hampering vehicle range or causing excessive noise. That's a tall task when you're dealing with 6,000-pound sedans and "midsize" trucks that weigh as much as a dually pickup.

Automotive dealer software company CDK Global published a lengthy study about EV service in late 2023. In it, one respondent said that "when it comes to EVs, tires are the new oil change." We published a story last August about Rivian R1Ts needing new rubber after as few as 6,000 miles. Not all EV owners deal with such egregious wear, but considering most service shops recommend oil changes every 5,000 miles on gasoline-powered cars, the comparison checks out in that case.

It's similar, really. EV's are heavy like a big muscle car, for their overall size and also have instant torque, often from all 4 wheels so they wear out the rubber bits pretty fast. My suspicion is that somewhere around 5 or 10 percent of all drivers (not picking on EV's here) rotate their tires properly, too.

China big mad at unfair Biden tax subsidies around American EV's;

Quote:

The United States Trade Ambassador, Katherine Tai, responded to China's WTO consultation request with harsh criticism. She says that not only is the country using unfair practices to undermine fair competition but it also leverages non-market practices and policies. The request to the WTO is still in limbo but could lead to changes in the act or other countermeasures.

China argues that the Inflation Reduction Act (IRA) unfairly tilts the playing field and discriminates when it comes to electric vehicles.

This complaint arises after the US restricted the number of electric cars that qualify for a clean vehicle tax credit up to $7,500 if their critical minerals or battery components were sourced from "foreign entities of concern," including companies from China, Russia, North Korea and Iran.

That's why it's levied a consultation request with the WTO. Ambassador Tai's remarks come as a direct denunciation of that consultation request.

"The Inflation Reduction Act is a groundbreaking tool for the United States to seriously address the global climate crisis and invest in U.S. economic competitiveness. It is our contribution to a clean energy future that we are collectively seeking with our allies and partners," Tai said. No doubt, to a degree, the act has forced some companies to change plans so that their products can take full advantage of the tax credits offered.

I drive an EV truck when I travel to various sites. Mostly highway. First set lasted 20K. Our feet grouped balked when I submitted the request for new tires, as that was 'too soon'. Sent a pic in with the penny test and got approval. It is a legit concern.

Please keep in mind they probably only objected because the EV fleet represents such a threat to the oil and gas industry so they couldn't fathom why new petroleum-based products would be needed for such wonder-vehicles.

The electricity crisis is here. Snippet/summary; German industrial production plummets because green energy mandates have killed it, while they transition to more EV's;

Quote:

In the midst of all this, the US is rushing headlong into the same future that Germany is experiencing. Spiking prices, insufficient supply, and a bleak future for anybody who is working his way up the economic ladder.

It's difficult to believe that our "leaders" are so clueless as to not know what they are doing. The gobsmacking obviousness of it makes claims of ignorance impossible to believe.

This is intentional. It simply has to be. The alternative is that there was a secret program to lobotomize every world leader pushing green energy.

This is the Green New Deal. It is not exactly Green, but the deal is certainly new. It is a bad one, though.
Sure, good time to buy a BEV.

Well about $100 million of that was rerouted to Biden and his cronies which includes his brother and son. Another $200 million was "lost" due to inflation when they put the deposit down with whatever contractor "won" the bid (Pelosi or Obama relative I am sure) and the rest well it takes time...
