Russia lost over 50% of its tanks since the beginning of the war OSINT researchers

A large-scale investigation using the latest available satellite imagery showed that tank numbers in Russian open-air storage have dropped to 48% of pre-war levels. Of the remaining 3517 tanks, only 279 are considered combat-ready.

Almost 2000 tanks need refurbishment before they can be used. Another 1200 tanks can only be stripped for parts.

Repair costs and limited production capacity have slowed tank replacements significantly. In 2024, Russia pulled just 1,150 tanks from storagehalf the number deployed in 2023.

Data from the researchers indicates a similar depletion of Russian IFV and APC reserves.

This does not mean Russia will "run out of tanks" or other equipment, but it signals challenges for continuing intense offensives reliant on massive human and equipment losses, a strategy Russia has frequently used in the past.

Do they, or is their government forcing them into death where they obviously don't want to be? That's the part I struggle with in this war. Easy to hate Putin but are all of his people bad? Kind of like if you go to war with China.

With all the war crimes being leveled at Russian troops so far (rape, pillaging, murder, executing pows), yea, the kinda do deserve it.

War is hell.

That said, if they were surrendering it would be a different story.

Yeah, I see no problem with this. If they didn't surrender... well that's war. Would it be different with a bullet or a bomb? No. Tanks crushed people all the time in WWI, WWII, the Korean War, etc. They're not (presumably) civilians. If they are uniformed soldiers they are fair game if they haven't surrendered.

More on the recent drone strike on Engels airbase, home of Russian strategic aviation.

"The Tu-160, on the other hand, requires special high-density fuel of the T-8V brand. Considering the limited attainability of the T-8V fuel, if tanks containing it were destroyed by drones tonight, Russian Tu-160 could be grounded completely or significantly limited in their operations."

If this war has taught us anything it is that without nukes the Russian military probably could not defeat the Texas National Guard. Talk about the definition of a paper tiger.

Would not say paper tiger as much as phantom military. After the Soviet Union fell, the black market for formerly Soviet weapons was hot. Stores of those weapons were on paper only as they sold them off but never reported the thefts.

Same thing as what had happened in Afghanistan. The 300,000 strong Afghan military was on paper. Payrolls for people that were not even there.

TXARNG was part of the GWOT for 20+ years, has their own SF and aviation assets, and did pretty well in combat.

I agree with your assessment more than you realize.

Here's the back story of how Russia's shadow fleet of falsely registered oil tankers became the key to it evading sanctions on its oil exports. Hitting it is long overdue as it is the largest remaining source of revenue financing Putin's war.

One of the hold-ups in the European sanctions on Russian oil and gas was the Biden administration attempting to restrict LNG exports from the US. Joe was sacrificing European winter heating at the alter of global warming.

In short, Joe was arming Ukraine, but at the same time giving cash to Russia to rearm and buy Chinese and NK arms to attack Ukraine. Incompetence and stupidity in its purist form.

But with Trump coming in and promising free flowing LNG, Europe can buy American LNG and tell the Russians to pound sand.

Interesting tangential situation that could have impacts on the war in Ukraine. Russia has cut off the rogue separatist Moldovan region Transnistria from Russian gas for some reason. Note that Ukraine has to watch that flank due to a small Russian force there.

I am assuming the cutoff is part of the deal for russian gas to pass through Ukraine to the rest of Europe expiring at the end of the year. They only allowed it because some of their allies needed the gas. Now that they have had time to find other sources, Ukraine is no longer going to allow it to keep going through.

Updates from Ukraine. Key takeaways:

  • Ukrainian forces reportedly captured the first North Korean prisoners of war (POWs) in Kursk Oblast.
  • North Korean forces are reportedly deploying large assault groups to combat operations despite frequent Ukrainian drone strikes, which is likely contributing to North Korea's high casualty rates and will likely affect the lessons that the North Korean military command will learn from fighting in the war.
  • Russian President Vladimir Putin maintains his maximalist pre-war demands to isolate Ukraine and weaken NATO and reportedly aims to enforce these demands in any possible talks with Western leaders about ending the war in Ukraine.
  • Ukrainian forces may have conducted a drone strike against an oil refinery in the Republic of Tatarstan on January 11, but details of the possible strike remain unclear at this time.
  • Ukrainian forces recently advanced in Kursk Oblast.

Interesting article which provides insights into the N. Koreans in Russia. They appear to be highly indoctrinated and willing to die for the Great Leader.

They have found a dairy on a dead Nork and he describes the "bait"' tactics used to kill a drone or the ways avoid arty.

Quote:

In the description of the drone tactics which was undated Jong wrote that the soldier acting as a lure should maintain a distance of about 7 meters, or 23 feet, from the drone. Soldiers under artillery fire should run toward a previously hit location, since the odds of the same spot getting hit twice is minimal.

Man, Putin really is the scourge of humanity right now.
