Why don't they adjust routing so those trains are not stopped there for any length of time?
UP only has two access points out of the port of Long Beach and this is one of those access points. These then route out of LA to Inland Empire (to the East) and then go from there. I know it's obvious but trains are not cars, they can't just reroute. If anything happens further up the line that causes a delay those trains have to slow. Usually the lines going into and out of rail yards can get pretty congested.
I didn't mean new tracks or anything like that. Just adjusting schedules so the trains aren't stopped there for any length of time.
Of course, having law enforcement do their job in the area would probably help too.
Not that simple. LOTS of traffic on rail lines and various other issues that can delay some trains for hours from getting out of a yard. I've called the crew for a train before, only to have them come in and sit for 8 hours without even making it out of the yard for various reasons. Then they hit their hours of service and have to be pulled off before even moving.
Higher priority trains coming through, delays getting the right power, track maintenance, Amtrak coming through, another train stopped somewhere up the line for a hotbox detector or fails a roll-by inspection, waiting on instructions from dispatchers, pulled over by a safety tester for either a random test or safety violation, another train up the line has to set out a bad car in a siding, a train ahead of them runs out of hours and they are literally forbidden from moving the train another inch so they sit until a new crew can be called out....the issues seem endless.
