More than I would care to admit to. A ton of good stories-- but ya, way too many fights.

Same bar mid 80s around Thanksgiving. I don't recall exactly what happened but fight started and my friends and I were literally in the middle of it tho not involved. Fight got broken up and anyone with Aggie or sip gear on got thrown out.

We go to our car to try and leave. Sip frat dudes siting on the hood. We start honking the horn in hullabaloo caneck caneck to try and get them off. Cop comes up and tell us that if we did it again, he would arrest us for "unnecessary use of horn". I told the cop to tell them to get off the hood and I'll stop......My friend starts mouthing off that "my brother is a cop in Houston and there no such thing as that." Frat boys and cops leave. We drive for about a couple blocks up 6th Street and start honking again. LOL. 80s were a great time to live in Austin!

80's were a great time to grow up in Austin for sure.

I was a manager at the Dixie Chicken in the late '80s. Broke up several fights. Prevented even more. Have a slight crook in my nose and a false front tooth as a result of a couple of them. TBH, the false tooth was from someone who followed me home after I kicked him out of the Chicken.. He waited a couple of hours and followed me home. I never noticed him until he jumped me on my own front porch, popped me in the face and then ran off.

That piano bar was called Speedy's

Austin was so much fun the 80s. We would hit Jorge's for Mexican food and Margaritas first. Then my gosh something would always happen. We would run into a sip frat out drinking. My friend, who is now an attorney, was an expert in getting me in a pickle. He kept ordering rounds for me and every girl in the place. We were extremely popular. I was having the time of my young life. Little did I know he was putting all these drinks on a frat guys tab. The next thing I know he says we got to go and I'm running down Sixth Street with a gang of frat guys half a block behind us.

I hid in an alley behind a trash can as 20 pair of shoes came running by. My pal was just laughing. Of course he is a lawyer now.

I managed to talk my way out of a few back in the 70's. At the time I could shoot pool very well - nobody likes to lose even a dollar at the pool tables.

Anybody here old enough to remember Woody at the Chicken? That poor dude - a resident of Snook as I recall, not a student - got into plenty of fights back in the day.

I was in a wedding "fight" with the maid of honor and her boyfriend. Lots of near fights - bars, parties, truck stop. Last fight with punches I was in was high school.

We're going to need more details on the wedding fight.

That was one of the guys I talked my way out of a fight with in the 70's. He could drink and try to start fights, but he sure couldn't shoot pool!

I helped break one up by pulling the combatants apart right after it broke out. Does that count?

The closest I ever got was at the Chicken a few years after I graduated. Some drunk idiot thought I stole his wallet and started trying to shove me around. After several shoves I was able to prove my innocence. He profusely apologized and all was well after that. I'm lame so that's all I got!

Right after I got out of school and got my first job, I worked with a guy from Detroit who had started about the same time. He was a real nerdy looking guy that had a pretty annoying yankee demeanor. Actually a pretty good guy once you got to know him and we are still friends to this day.

Anyway, anytime we went to a bar to do a little boot scootin, it wouldn't take this guy 30 minutes to have some cowboy pissed off at him and wanting to fight.

Our group had to back him out of those places a number of times. Don't think we ever actually had to fight our way out but there were a few pretty hairy situations.

Finally convinced him to tone it down in these places.

Which one of you short guys single-handedly beat the crap out of about five guys at a gas station on 2818 late one night in the mid-90s? It was the lone gas station on west side of 2818 out by itself.

Damndest thing I've ever seen. We were actually driving by and noticed large group of dudes gearing up to fight, so we casually pulled in to watch. Had no idea who these people were.

This little dude is just standing there waiting while these dudes rush him and he beats all of their asses at the same time. It was a freaking movie. This was before cell phones were prevalent or I would have tried to record it.

After it was over we hauled ass out of there only to get pulled over by the cops further north up 2818. Cops thought we were part of fight. They separated us but we both had exact same story so they let us go.

I've only been in one physical altercation that I remember in detail. It was in middle school and some black and Hispanic kids were hanging around the vending machine after school. Some racial slurs where thrown my way by I just wanted some candy

My candy got stolen by a big Mexican kid, like over 6foot and huge. I think he played on the defensive line. Of course they asked what I was going to do and I was getting pushed around.

I ended up punching on black guy in the face or neck and I took some of the bearing that was going to inevitably come my way.

This is going to sound racist because it is but I ended up saying something to the effect of "decent people can't be left alone by nwords (stressing the hard r) and people who need a towel for the excess moisture on their backside.

I learned that day using that language was worse than them starting it and hitting me, one of the little hood rats went straight to VP to tell on me. And I got in trouble for it.

But hey, we had a great football team in Jr high and won state our senior year

I hung out at Kay's Lounge often enough that, despite it not being the kind of place you'd expect that kind of thing, I had the opportunity to step in and break up two or three over the years. Each time, I got to drink for free the rest of the night.

Pre 1984 this was very common.

Then when words like "assault" came up on background checks prevented people from getting good jobs it realy seemed to stop.
In the 1970s during the tu vs ou game in Dallas there would be 200+ arrests for drunken fighting.
Hardly any of that happens now.

It was indeed. A lot of media types went there, especially from 13, since we were just right down the street. Dr. Red Duke would also frequent the place, back in the day.

I got into probably 4 good full-on bar brawls during my time at A&M and more than a few lesser scuffles. We had one that broke out in the Tap that eventually spilled out into the parking lot with about 12 guys from both sides- that was a fun night. Most of my friends and roommates were good ol' country boys so we had these other guys pretty well whooped and on the run. I'm pretty sure I had a class with one of the main culprits from the other group the next day, so the look on both of our faces when we locked eyes was probably pretty funny.

In the Fall of 1996 we got in the damndest bar fight I've ever been involved in or seen in person. I can't remember the name of the construction company, but a small shop during that time employed a pretty large crew of 25-35 year old type guys that were pretty rough. They played in the city league softball. Our group had a team that played against them and our games always got pretty chirpy. One night after beating them, our team headed to the Chicken. It was its usual packed self with no domino or pool tables open (we had a pool table) and shoulder to shoulder crowd.

Guys from their team showed up and laid quarters on the table. My brother tells them that we aren't interested in opening the table up. One of their guys bowed up to him and I knew it was about to go south. Just about everyone on our team could see it coming and scanned quickly to identify someone on their team. The guy bowing up to my brother quickly grabs the q ball from the table and hits my brother in the head and the fight was on like donkey kong. We had pool tables shoved all over the place and fights going on between all of us. This took place in the back corner which now has a big door out to the back porch that didn't exist then. The crowd was standing on tables yelling and watching. We got the jump on them and were pulling the decisive victory out when Cory and Hans (RIP) made their way trough the crowd. They saw our group and told us they didn't realize it was us and had called the cops. They opened the small doorway into the cooler separating the back corner and the kitchen and pushed us in. Cops showed up and arrested the construction boys and Cory and Hans covered for us saying we had ran off. We sat in that damn cooler for over an hour waiting for the cops to clear out.

That was the last major fight I found myself in, and to be honest while I have had skirmishes before, that kind of fight isn't the romantic thing that you see in movies. Even when you win it hurts like hell.
