Does Georgia and/or Chechnya still have a smoldering insurgency? As Putin redeploys troops to Ukraine might they get organized again? Maybe some of these supplies need to go there…
Chechnya has been bought off with hundreds of millions a year to run it like their strongman wants to. Now if he dies or the money runs out? All bets are off.

let me just state how awesome it is that when the USA is on the brink of a potential war with a nuclear superpower,

the President is telling our Paratroopers they will soon be in Ukraine.

only to then have the President's staff state the President has always said we would never be in Ukraine.

because we have only the best and brightest leading us.

We all know that most voters haven't had terribly high standards for a solid generation. The ranks of our elected are rife with idiocy from the presidency all the way down to city council seats. Most Americans are insanely intellectually lazy, which leads to intellectually lazy voting habits, low standards, and bottom of the barrel representation.

One wonders how many more of these ever-escalating sanctions the Russians will endure before a cornered Putin strikes back: they remind me of FDR's sanctioning of the Japanese. I think we all know that sanctions don't deter anybody, they merely piss off the recipient.

And eliminate their ability to finance an ongoing war.

I get it, and you may be borne out by the outcome. Sanctions are nevertheless what brought the Japanese to Pearl Harbor and the Philippines.

I agree. But the alternative is inaction with an even greater resultant risk of large scale military conflict. When countries with large militaries decide to go on rampage there, unfortunately, are no risk free options. I think that choking them out as much as possible on the front end probably yields the best results either way.

That is just some sick isht. Drag a bunch of people out and threaten them at gunpoint to participate in enemy propaganda while offering less that $20 to sell themselves out as the alternative.

I fully agree. I just have a feeling that most will choose the bullet over the $20. As I believe you have said, this is going to be their Alamo.

In January, experts on the same show estimated that Russia could overtake the entire neighboring country in a matter of 11 minutes. Their current predictions have shifted from minutes to decades for the Russian armed forces to achieve Putin's goals in his senseless war against Ukraine.

Korotchenko surmised, "It's obvious that the process of denazification of Ukraine will take the minimum of 15-20 years." He predicted that the Russian troops would have to remain on Ukrainian territory, with the Russian military in charge of the entire country for the foreseeable future: "Whether this will take 15, 20 years or more, time will tell."

General Shamanov was even more pessimistic, as he grimly anticipated that it would take the "re-education" of at least two generations of Ukrainians before they would welcome or tolerate Russia's dominance. He also noted that Russia's one-million-man armed forces aren't enough to meet such a challenge, calling for massive increases to the country's military might. Shamalov concluded: "Today, it can be clearly predicted that we will have to remain in Ukraine for 30-40 years."

This is Melitopol (where Spaceman's fam is). Under Russian occupation but not destroyed. Lots of kidnappings and FSB bullisht. Mariupol, farther east, is the Alamo. I imagine that folks In Melitopol feel the same way but we'll have to see how it goes. Praying for all of them.

Unfortunately this shows what the real problem is in Russia. As much as the Russian apologists on the board want to blame NATO for "threatening" Russia by having a friendly Ukraine, that's not the problem that led to war. The Russians can't handle that the inferior Ukraine, Poland, Estonia, Lithuania, and other Soviet and Russian Empire components aren't under Russian control. There may be the underlying concern of having padding around their border for opposing armies to go through, but thats mainly due to the fact that they are stuck in the 1900s in terms of a mindset. No one should have to sacrifice their freedom for Russia's insecurities.

And that was a terrible decision that brought them to their knees. The Russian brass know more than anyone how truly bad they're doing and the costs they're paying. I don't think they want any part of NATO or any new conflicts with how unprepared and spread thin they are.

I can't quite see it your way, but I understand it.

In hindsight, I think the best move would've been to be in Ukraine in force before the invasion could've started. I don't think the Russians would've invaded had there been 5000 or so American military there embedded with the Ukrainians. If these sanctions outrage the Russians instead of deterring them, we may end up with far more people in harms way than what we could've gotten away with in January. This is just a guess, though.

Nobody knows, and I hope you're right.

Stationing our troops in the west wouldn't have prevented the Russians from entering Donbas and if we stationed troops in the east, Russia would have just sent his little green men to turn up the heat on the existing civil war.

Trump threatened Moscow if Putin entered Ukraine. Those credible threats would have prevented things from ever starting. Instead our president talked about varied economic responses if there was a minor excursion.

NO AMNESTY!

in order for democrats, liberals, progressives et al to continue their illogical belief systems they have to pretend not to know a lot of things; by pretending "not to know" there is no guilt, no actual connection to conscience. Denial of truth allows easier trespass.

For anyone who believes that China isn't on Russia's side… They're ginning up internal animosity against the west to use against us later on. Everyone within China is being taught that we're all evil, it's Ukraine's fault, and Russia is just protecting itself against the baddies.

People keep forgetting that everyone thought that this was a bluff until the last minute, even Ukraine was surprised.
