When I heard there was an amphib force massing off of Odessa it became clear that Kiev was in the crosshairs. They have to defend Kiev from the east, south and north now. Going to have to retreat west and keep supply lines intact and make Russia play a steep blood price.

ETA: Ukrainian command should have already considered and to some degree built a defensible line to the west of Kiev.

Self defense is a stretch.
You have to be attacked or face impending attack to use self-defense as an excuse.
