Posturing? trying to draw out the Ukrainians? setting up for another front?

Retreating in an area where they have no long term territorial goals. Want to preserve their gains in the south and east, instead.

Maybe the Ukes really may be fighting the Russians to a standstill?
Maybe a little. Much like they did pre-invasion, they're going to do a token pullback, and rapidly supply and reinforce from the rear. If Ukraine tries to attack their front or supply convoys, they will claim Ukraine is taking advantage of their peaceful actions, but Russia will continue to negotiate. Once the negotiations fall apart, Russia restarts the advanced, but with better supplies, personnel, and supply lines.

Maybe. Maybe also during that period the Ukrainians will have received the promised weapons and training to use them.

Russians drove through radioactive Red Forest by Chernobyl with no radioactive gear on
The soldiers drove their armored vehicles through a highly toxic zone called the Red Forest, kicking up clouds of radioactive dust as they traveled, workers at the site said. One of the workers claimed driving through the area with no protection was "suicidal" because the radioactive dust they inhaled would likely cause internal damage in their bodies, according to Reuters.

Tons of variables there, anywhere from immediate health effects to cancer years from now, down to no effect

Depends on intake of particles, time in the area, treatment (if any),still wearing the same uniforms, front or back of convoy, tons of factors could play in.

My wife was a radio chemist and doesn't believe there is much risk driving through there. Prior to the war, visiting Chernobyl was on her bucket list.

I would love to bump some posts on that other thread to point out some wrongness that was posted a few weeks ago. There is a certain person that said that Ukraine should have surrendered a couple weeks ago because there was zero chance that they could stop Russia.

Saw this article from May 2021. Life in Crimea since the annexation has not been going well under Russian rule.

Massive water shortages and rationing, little food, EMS services are nearly non-existent. It is Al Jazeera, so factor that in.

He's posting Scott Ritter tweets and arguing that the Russian push to Kiev from the north was just a feint in the other thread.

It's confirmation bias and the same thing happened with COVID.

Doctors told us that masks worked because they thought that they did and it just makes sense. They never applied any critical thinking skills to the real world results. Keegan posted chart after chart about the data, but they couldn't apply critical thinking to what they were seeing.

I don't know how you could see thousands of destroyed Russian vehicles, dead generals, stalled advances, POWs, supply problems and still think that Russia was 100% destroying Ukraine.

I'm neither a doctor nor a general, but I hope that I am a critical thinker. It's not over at all, but I still believe that Russia is taking a pretty good ass thumping.

Re: COVID, KN95 masks were proven very effective vs cheap Non-medical/respirator masks which were shown to be very ineffective. Additionally, respiratory contraction isn't the only vector for infection so there's a lot of nuance and situational specificity involved and, no, wearing a mask of even the "best" type won't fully protect you.

But it all got boiled down to either "masks don't work" or "masks are a panacea" by different groups because it's more easily reconcilable with pre-established worldviews and as a simple working hypothesis that allows you to easily move on with daily life.

Obviously not even a remotely similar situation but I think that we may see similar elements in some folks' thought processes.

Not you, this guy:

Fun fact: Anton is gay, he used to be vocal about gay rights in Russia, about hatred to the community and how it is dangerous to gay in Russia. He even moved to Ukraine for some time

I read into this he was "re-educated" by Russia. And now loves big brother.

What happens in this war will be a very interesting book to read at some point. The bravery of the Ukrainians has been pretty amazing to witness. I'd like to see Russia fully kicked out of Ukraine, but I don't see how Russia will let that happen. They would use WMD's before they completely lost everything (IMO).

I think he's getting paid enough money to work for RT that he's able to conveniently "forget" his prior principles and best interest.

This whole thing has shown that Putin's movements are all based on an assumption that people will invariably behave in their own selfish best interest instead of altruistically or in holding with their principles.

Hard to say that he's wrong if you see how his career has played out. Nearly everyone can be bought, and the few that can't be bought can be killed. The hole in this approach only appears at sufficient scale when other dynamics emerge.

As was attributed to Churchill: "Americans can always be trusted to do the right thing, once all other possibilities have been exhausted." I think that this applies to many people, particularly in the west, when a situation forces the issue. Not all, but most.

Need a little help with this one.

Quote:

So I'm walking the dog and see this. Wait. Did I just read that right? The Russian government is offering them fixed amount of rubles of 5000 rubles per gram of gold. I did some rough math in my head and it came out to about $50/g in USD, and I think the going rate here is something like $60/g in USD.
But that is taking the exchange rate of the ruble to USD at about $.01 per ruble. It's actually something like $.011.
Then this past week, we saw that Russia would sell oil to "unfriendly nations" in gold. Germany NEEDS Russian natural gas and won't boycott it. So does Austria. Turkey already said they aren't boycotting. Russia then selects what countries need to pay in gold for a barrel of oil.
This then means gold is the center of the system with a co-anchor of oil. And thus you then have a fixed ruble amount to gold and oil.
Quote:

t hit me that IF this is true, which I verified here which sources it from here (I don't speak Russian) then this could mean that Luke Gromen's prophecy last week could come true inside of weeks. Now, Luke used an exaggeration of 1000 barrels per ounce, which would make oil $2, but I have heard many outlets where Russia feels comfortable with what we would know as $50 oil.

Using rough math, that is about 40 barrels per ounce in USD. Anything over those barrels per ounce, creates the arbitrage that Luke was talking about. If it's 50-100-1000 it makes no difference what would happen is there would be a rush to gold from "unfriendly nations" that need gold to then pay that amount of gold for oil. For "friendly" nations, they can buy in rubles. But how would you then exchange rubles for yuan? Perhaps they have a fixed number they have in mind and then so many yuan = so many rubles indicating China can thus convert Yuan to gold, on demand.

Is that really possible?

Agreeing to buy gold at a set rate is just them implementing "the gold standard"

I understand that but would in the end that really prop up the ruble long term?
JJxvi

It would tie the ruble to gold and the rest of the entire Russian economy would swing wildly in volatility instead of just gold prices doing that.
