Mornin' all. We are getting close to the end of the state's case in chief. I expect medical testimony today to establish the deaths and the wounds to the decedents. Assuming the state rests at some point today, then the jury will be out while arguments are made on a directed verdict. Should be lively.

What are the chances of that this kicks off with a directed verdict and what would that look like (for those of us whose closes corollary is a Matlock episode)?

I would not put him on the stand at this point. No reason to do so with the sorry presentation by the prosecution. Unnecessary risk. Kyle maybe a pretty level-headed guy but he's still 18 and too young. He could easily get tripped up on cross.

If they're smart the prosecution will rest first thing this morning, their witnesses they call do more damage than good. the ADA is a disaster.

I agree the risk is way too high and the prosecution has been poor or worse. If this wasn't so high profile, I wouldn't be surprised in a directed verdict. Being this is what it is, I doubt that will happen.

Agree. The prosecution blew it, and their case is weak to begin with.

Any reasonable person that watches that tape should see obvious self-defense.

One thing this judge has repeatedly stressed is his deep concern that this justice process be viewed as "fair" in the eyes of the public. To me, that says a jury verdict is his vast preference. He may throw out a few of the charges by refusing to instruct the jury on them but I would really be surprised if he entered a complete directed verdict.

Pretty sure the judge would call the prosecution to the bench, then proceed to reach across and slap the **** out of them while excoriating them for wasting his time and the jury's. The jury then storms out of the box like their team just beat Alabama and beats the prosecutors add they last in the fetal position for putting on this traveshamockery of a trial while Kyle's attorneys throw him into the crowd and he crowd surfs to the door as a free man. The judge then bangs the gavel and calls for the bailiffs to drag the prosecutors out of the courthouse and throw them into the Mudpit of Misery in the front where all humiliated lawyers must wallow in self pity and humiliation until their next win. They see Kyle being carried out of the courthouse waving his gun in the air and screaming, "We won! We won!"

Any idea of whether this will be done by the end of next week?

I've been enjoying watching the Rekieta stream. It's like they've turned this trial into a sporting event.

They haven't really been going after the gun charge, right? And while I could see it legally, it would be really messed up for the jury to acquit on self defense while charging on the weapon. It would effectively be saying "he was justified in using the tool to save his life, but shouldn't have had the tool." The drawn conclusions just don't reconcile (I'm talking logically - I know legal is a different issue).
