Trunk or Treats aren't a Covid thing.

I agree that Trunk or Treats in the suburbs are stupid, but they've been around for 20 years. My neighborhood has lost over half its trick-or-treaters to trunk-or-treats at local churches. My culdesac hasn't had a trick-or-treater in 2 years because we're so buried back in the neighborhood (not that I'm complaining).

I grew up in the country. Trunk-or-Treats would've been awesome where I grew up if they'd been around back then. I never got to trick-or-treat (other than my grandparents, aunt, & great aunt) because every house was 2+ miles away from the next one. I loved having no neighbors, but trick-or-treating was one of thost things I never got to experience.

Anderson, TX has had trunk or treat for years now (spread out, rural population that needs to consolidate in one place so the kids can walk.)

The 2020 trunk or treat in Anderson would have given Fauci an aneurism. It was a giant mosh pit of a crowd. Kids having fun. People passing out candy. Less than 1% of the people wearing masks.

Less than 1% in masks?! What you're so against masks that you wouldn't let the kids where their Halloween masks?!? Monsters, they lot of you. /End_sarcasm

does not change the fact that this is stupid.

let the kids interact with people.

god knows the karens and the brads have locked their little brailens up for a year and a half. let them be kids.

Its hardly stupid. You may not like it but some people like myself don't like the whole traditional door knock trick or treat nonsense. For several reasons.

If you have no kids, kids or grown, or you just want to opt out, why should you contribute? I mean, I'm all for those who WANT to participate to do it, but many don't. When I was a kid, we went out and did this after dark. Now, parents escort their kids around early -- before dark. Some are out before 5:00pm. That's ridiculous. Hardly interacting, especially when some people aren't even home or they aren't set up for visitors. One year we were going to do this, got everything set up around 6, waited, and guess what? No one showed up. A neighbor came by and said everyone had already made their way through. I was like, "what? What do you mean 'everyone?'" like it was organized by someone.

At a church or party setting where everyone has chosen to be there, there are games, plenty of things for all the kids to do and have fun. I would have rather had that when I was a kid than go door to door. There's plenty of interaction there. I've volunteered at my church for these things and will this year.

I also don't like older junior high and high school aged kids trick or treating. This is something for, primarily, elementary school kids. The older kids need to go to parties and hang out there. My dad hated that aspect of it so much, he'd give the older kids years' old twinkee like snack cakes that we had buried in the back of our pantry! I know some disagree with this, and that's fine, but kids can be kids without doing all the things I did when I was a kid.

Sheesh -- on one hand, its like I'm told NOTHING can be like it was when I was growing up (traditional family, etc.) and then, when things actually have changed for the better, people say "let it be like it used to be..." Things DO change and this is one change akin to the Big Chief Tablet being replaced by the iPad. Embrace it.

This board can make anything into a political fight.

I don't think I've ever heard anyone kneejerk on the trunk or treat before.

My church does a trunk or treat. Its wonderful for my kids. It's basically a halloween party. The kids are super into it, so are the parents, and everyone has a good time. It's usually done the week before halloween, so door-to-door trick or treating is still on the radar, which we partake in as well

Our kids did it every year at church in the early 2000's. They all now wear Aggie rings so I guess they turned out all right despite not experiencing the delight of approaching the homes of strangers and begging for sugar.

Meh. trunk or treats have been a bad hood outreach for churches for years. Nothing Covid related.

It speaks to a larger issue where not only make everything political but everyone wants to be oppressed and become a victim. It's getting worse each and every day. Until people stop entertaining the false sense of victimhood it will never end.

Like many have commented, this type of thing definitely predates COVID. My oldest is almost 9 and this has for sure been a thing her entire life, though I'd definitely never heard of it growing up, and we lived in a tiny town. It's cool though. It's a very efficient candy acquisition process for the kids. Get in, get candy, get out.

But one new thing I've definitely noticed in the last few years is all the jello shots and fireball shots for the adults when we take the kids trick or treating.

I support both of these new Halloween fads.

Not really. Been going on a long time. Great for people in rural areas where there aren't suburbs with sidewalks and houses stuck on top of each other like you liberal city folk love.

The kids do interact with people. Oftentimes more so than at regular trick or treating. You should try understanding what a thing actually is before criticizing it.

So this is a thing.

Kids will be trick-or-treating out of cars, holding out little butterfly nets to collect candy throughout the neighborhood

That's not on Halloween, doesn't replace trick or treating.
they neighborhoods are explicitly "cancelling" walking trick or treating this year so "kids do not bring COVID to houses", and replacing it with this.
this is not community coming together. it is "keep your little covid carriers off my property".

Well, that IS dumb. Maybe you can learn to provide context in your posts in the future.

Tough to provide that context with the image linked in the OP. That Trunk or Treat is set for 10:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m. the day before Halloween and specifically mentions yard parties. That sounds like being together on someone's property.

I think the OP misunderstood. It is not drive by trick or treating.

What is the problem with Trunk or Treats?

Great outreach for churches. Provides a focal point to trick or treat before dark. Add in activities and fun. Plus you don't have to worry about the character of the neighbors. You aren't rained out (normally can move indoors in inclement weather).

Yes if you live in a nice neighborhood this is probably less important. But if you live in an apartment or less affluent area those may not be real options.

He is not describing a trunk or treat. Trunk or treats are normally church or school gatherings with group activities.

What he said was Kid's would drive by in cars, not get out, get handed candy then leave. Drive thru trick or treating.

Could OP give more details to clear this up? Orig poster provided more context

Seems like a traditional trunk or treat. The sign mentions "yard games", so I think it is probably a group of cars with a common area of games.
