Just watched the 60 Minutes segment on his response to Afghanistan and the capitol riots.

That man shouldn't have stopped when he left A&M.

He would be a great President of the United States, particularly where we find ourselves now.

Aggies can be quite stupid sometimes. Neocons have wasted trillions trying to bring muh democracy to people who don't want it yet we celebrate them for some reason.

What was his response on Afghanistan?

He said the withdrawal was a disaster and made him physically ill. He also admitted he was part of the problem - he was part of making the Afghan military in our image. Too complicated and set them up to fail without our assistance.

Good to hear that.

As stated on the other thread, he has previously (pre-Presidency) ridiculed Biden on foreign policy so if he's consistent his opinion should not have changed with Biden's record as President.

Robert Gates' letter to the Wall Street Journal earlier this year:

"Regarding your editorial "The Biden Contradiction" (Oct. 30): Since entering public service 54 years ago, I have avoided getting involved in partisan politics. While it is certainly fair to quote my criticisms of Joe Biden's record on national security, fairness requires me to note for the record that those comments written in 2014 also noted that Mr. Biden was a man of genuine integrity and character. It is also worth noting that I wrote in these very pages that Donald Trump "is stubbornly uninformed about the world and how to lead our country and government, and temperamentally unsuited to lead our men and women in uniform. He is unqualified and unfit to be commander-in-chief" ("Sizing Up the Next Commander-in-Chief," op-ed, Sept. 17, 2016).

Ignoring his comments on Trump the bolded is an absolute embarrassing take by Gates. I mean, wow. Cringeworthy.

He also said he is a big proponent of institutional government programs and criticized Trump for not respecting them. My interpretation is he is a dedicated civil servant who is a fan of big government which Trump is not. He did say he is for a strong military. Some of Anderson coopers questions were leading as one would expect with the show.

Watched it also. It was an interesting interview. In fairness to Gates, it was obviously edited. Who knows what he said before and after a given point that might shed more light.

That being said, I was a bit surprised that someone with his vast experience and sobriety would fall for the more facile take of the guy carrying a Confederate flag in the Capitol, and talking like it was some serious event. That was even a member of the more respectful group in the northern wing that was getting along with the officers in the Senate.

For him to say "that didn't even happen in the Civil War" is ridiculously conflating someone carrying a flag as a symbol - -Dont' Tread on Me and Texas Gonzalez flags were just as common --- he was sonoarously comparing it to some Confederate capture of the Capitol. Really `cable news low wit' style take that just would not have expected to be parrotted.

The serious things about Jan 6 were not the Confederate flags.

But like said- -- editing may have robbed of us of all kinds of amplifying statements that would have sounded less cable-news narrative sound-byte.

He would of been a great contributor to trumps staff, but he is losing it when talks about January 6. I get how most bureaucrats are scared about that day, but that's the point! They should be! Most of the people who walk those Halls are not elected, I hope they realize sometimes the person they are working for is wrong! They want to think they are untouchable, but every decision they make touches everybody in America.

I saw that, and my thought was that Gates needs to stop watching CNN and other bull***t "news" sources.

Anderson Cooper also repeated the myth that January 6 was an "insurrection", when no one is charging that.

I was not a fan of Gates as our president, at all. The freshman F rule (can't remember the name for it but basically let's freshmen flunk a couple classes and then have it removed from GPA) and a few other things he implemented were terrible. But I'd take him any day over the crazy leadership that has taken over A&M the past few years.

Yes, but I expect nothing less of CNN hacks or any MSM water-carrier for the Dems.

But Gates buying that literally cable-news or NYT level of dunce hyperbole surprised me. Especially repeating it in a such a sober interview environment.

Zgolfz85 said his TDS was flaring up. It sure looked like it at that point. Just no objectivity there.

Also bad when he said the extreme polarization, and remarked upon the hate, but not even a hint of word of criticism of the Regressive Left's assault on practically all of the "institutions" he is so concerned with.

Unrelated: the segment on the cattle drive and the British pubs that followed was entertaining. For any who taped Gates interview, you might then watch those.

I am amazed.

10 years ago, Robert Gates had a lot of fans on this group. Pretty much everyone. There was hardly anyone who openly hated on him.

Now he has a lot of detractors and people who don't like him. Very interesting.
