Mark Davis didn't show Gruden the door bc of the language in the emails. He was let go bc there was zero chance of Gruden keeping the CEO status that everyone wants from their NFL (and college) coach - control of the locker room, reduced distractions, laser focus on wining and only winning.

That was all poof gone.

Make it about cancel culture if that makes you feel better, but this was about one thing only. Winning. And the inability to maintain the control that's needed.

Supposedly the other part of this is that Gruden received topless pictures of some of the chearleaders from a resort trip the chearleaders took that was paid/sponsored by the Redskins years ago. The pictures are reportedly of a cheerleader's photo shoot while on the trip but some girls were told they must ("were forced") to go topless.

Regardless, if Gruden received these pictures of nude ADULT chearleaders and there was no evidence in them the girls were being forced to go topless (ie; if they appeared to be part of a willing photo shoot), then how is this on Gruden?

Gruden was fired because he underachieved and his salary was about to triple.

Since the Raiders were moving from Oakland to Las Vegas, Gruden didn't want to lose millions to California's ridiculously high income tax so he requested a back loaded contract. For the first 5 years, Gruden was making ~$5M per year and the last years Gruden would make ~$15M per year.

For reference, league average is around $7M per year. The highest paid coach is Belicheck at $12M per year. At $5M per year, Gruden was getting paid on the same as NFL legends Joe Judge and Vic Fangio.

From the Raiders perspective, it was a great deal. Get Gruden for 5 years on a cheap bargain and if he makes them a Superbowl contender, pay him at the top of the league.

So were the Raiders close to competing for a Superbowl?

When Gruden started in 2018, the Chiefs were dominating the AFC West. Gruden traded the top talent (Khalil Mack & Amari Coper) for future picks. The Raiders are predictably bottom dwellers at 4-12. The next two season are an improvement but still only average at 7-9 & 8-8.

By 2021, the tides had changed. The Chiefs were struggling and the AFC West was up for grabs. The Raiders start strong upsetting a talented Ravens team. They then eek out wins against bad Steelers and Dolphins.

Next they lose a crucial game and the division lead to the Chargers in a game that was never really in question. This weekend, the Raiders got embarrassed by an average Chicago team.

It was clear that the Raiders wouldn't be in the playoffs this season. The Gruden experiment was over. He is an average coach who wouldn't live up to his hype, but the Raiders were stuck with him an his hefty contract for 6 more seasons.

So how do you get out of a bad contract situation? Dig up some old emails and call him a racist.

It's not about sending a message. It's about the money.

Good post. Makes sense!

My first thought when the news broke was how ridiculous the NFL has become. My second thought was who dig up these old e-mails and produced them and why? So, Mark Davis?

Btw, as to my first thought, has the NFL kicked breast cancer to the curb for the gays? Appears, rainbow colors have replaced pink.

I see these journalists haven't read their own article and Twitter comments, or they'd see vulgar sentiments like this are still in very common public use, but acceptable only if made by the right people against the right people.

Gruden just became one of my all time favorite coaches. Goodell is everything he labeled him.

That all depends on who they hire and whether they start winning. If the NFL wants to be purists about who they hire and only promote people that are politically correct, good luck winning with those standards.

https://sports.yahoo.com/jon-gruden-sues-nfl-roger-goodell-for-allegedly-leaking-emails-that-got-gruden-fired-by-raiders-205014827.html

Quote:

. . .
Former Las Vegas Raiders coach Jon Gruden filed a lawsuit against the NFL and commissioner Roger Goodell on Thursday accusing the league and Goodell of trying to destroy his career using a "malicious and orchestrated campaign," according to the Las Vegas Review-Journal.

The lawsuit claimed Goodell and the NFL leaked racist and anti-gay emails sent by Gruden in an attempt to "destroy the career and reputation of Jon Gruden." The lawsuit also alleged the NFL leaked additional emails to the New York Times to ensure Gruden would resign or be fired. It claimed Gruden was "forced to resign" following those emails.
. . .
Roughly 650,000 emails were reviewed as part of the league's investigation into misconduct by the Washington Football Team. Of those emails, only ones sent by Gruden were leaked.

Those emails revealed Gruden used racist and anti-gay language in messages to former Washington team president Bruce Allen. Gruden reportedly called Goodell a "fa***t" and a "clueless anti football p****y" in those emails. He also commented on then-St. Louis Rams coach Jeff Fisher drafting "queers," a reference to former defensive end Michael Sam. Prior to the 2014 NFL draft, Sam came out as gay. Gruden also used racist language to describe NFLPA head DeMaurice Smith, who is Black.

Hosmer-Henner argued, "There is no explanation or justification" for Gruden being the only person included in the leak. Hosmer-Henner also questioned the timing of the leaks, claiming the emails were held for months and weren't released until the Raiders were playing regular-season games.

The NFL fined the Washington Football Team $10 million after reviewing the team's workplace culture. That decision was met with criticism from some entities, including Congress, which requested the NFL turn over documents related to the investigation. Goodell stood by the league's punishment and refused to release those documents.

Congress wasn't alone in pushing Goodell to release the entire report. Raiders owner Mark Davis called for the league to release its findings. Davis also questioned the timing of the email leaks that led to Gruden's resignation.

In the weeks following his resignation, Gruden threatened action against the NFL, saying, "The truth will come out" about the email scandal.

In October, the NFL denied leaking Gruden's emails.

Discovery might actually be delicious in this case.

I think that's just color/context to show that the release of Gruden's emails was targeted at him.

The complaint alleges as COAs "intentional interference with contractual relations, tortious interference with prospective economic advantage, negligence, negligent hiring, negligent supervision, civil conspiracy, and aiding and abetting."

This link gets more into the details of the suit.

This whole deal doesn't change my opinion of Gruden in the least bit.

Like Mike Leach, he's an intense coach that loves football, more intense than the rest.

If he was in baseball, he woulda been a Pete Rose kind of coach, with Al Hrabosky attitude.

The NFL filed a Motion to Dismiss subject to a Motion to Compel Arbitration it previously filed.

https://apnews.com/article/nfl-sports-roger-goodell-jon-gruden-nevada-04de28a89916463487518d11e62e9152

Quote:

. . .
The NFL filed a motion asking a Nevada court to dismiss former Raiders coach Jon Gruden's lawsuit against the league, saying the accusations that the the NFL leaked Gruden's old, offensive emails are "baseless" and "should be dismissed for failure to state a single viable cause of action."

The league responded Wednesday to the suit Gruden filed in district court in Clark County, Nevada, in November. The NFL filed a motion to dismiss the case and also asked the court to stay that motion until it first rules on whether the case should be moved to arbitration.

Gruden resigned as coach of the Raiders in October with more than six seasons remaining on his 10-year, $100 million contract.

He claimed a "malicious and orchestrated campaign" was used by the NFL and commissioner Roger Goodell to destroy Gruden's career by leaking the old emails that included racist, misogynistic and homophobic language.

The emails were sent to former Washington Football Team executive Bruce Allen and others from 2011 to 2018 during Gruden's time as an announcer at ESPN. The emails came from a set of 650,000 emails obtained by the league in June during an investigation into the workplace culture of the Washington Football Team
. . .
"Gruden does not, and cannot, dispute that he wrote the published emails. He does not, and cannot, dispute that he sent those emails to multiple parties," the league's filing says. "Nor does he claim that they were somehow altered or edited and that the repugnant views espoused in them were not in fact expressed by him. Instead, Gruden filed the instant complaint against the NFL and the commissioner, painting himself as the victim in a fictional story and seeking money through baseless claims against the NFL."

The league denied leaking the emails which had been sent to up to a half-dozen people and added that Gruden had no "expectation of privacy" for the emails.

The filing said even if the league had leaked the emails it still would not constitute "intentional interference with a contract" as claimed by Gruden because the NFL had no obligation to protect the confidentiality of the emails, had the right to disclose truthful information to the media and could have suspended or canceled Gruden's contract because of the emails.
. . .

NFL lawyers stated, "Obviously it was the FBI that leaked the emails. Where has Gruden been? Did he not follow the Trump Russia saga, or Flynn, Gaetz etc? The NFL had nothing to do with the leak, Gruden should sue the FBI."
