it looks like the US citizens and afghan terps and other helpers are ****ed and going to die badly, pretty certain now.

however, i just dont see the logistical capability of avoiding a military disaster either.

our 5200 troops are literally hostages. If they make a determined effort to interdict the runways, attack incoming aircraft, and storm the airport, i can't see any chance of a US military victory or even a dunkirk style disaster with a silver lining.

worse, the taliban seem to be learning from or working with the modern left media, and US some troops might even think they can surrender and survive to be ransomed. maybe they even can - that could be a plan.

bottom line, we can only get 5200 troops out alive if they allow it.

that's how bad it is. potentially the worst event in US military history.

Even if the Taliban had the best of intentions (riiiiiiight) .. they are not going to stand around the perimeter and absorb VBIED attacks. These are not professional soldiers, they are irregular militia in it for the loot and rapine.

If ISIS-K really brings the heat then there will be no perimeter. It will be US military vs ISIS-K at the fenceline, with no feasible way to call in fire support because of the proximity of dense urban terrain.

This was 100% avoidable but not ceding Bagram.
