Here are the numbers I found for US service men/women killed in Afghanistan broken down into hostile and non-hostile causes by year
Those 4 killed in 2001 were not due to enemy forces, they were friendly fire incidents where the brass called for bombs to be dropped, not the guys on the ground.

You know what else Bagram had? A literal world class trauma center. You know what Kabul airport doesn't have? A world class trauma center.

I wonder how many Marines died in abandoned offices being used as makeshift casualty collection points or medivacs flying across the country due to lack of higher tier medical in a timely manner.

good catch, "friendly" was grouped in as a subset of "hostile" i guess because it was technically a combat related death. here it is broken out

I agree,

I am not an expert and hopefully someone will correct me if I am wrong.

Usually they are tracked and when they get closer to the conflict area they turn off their transponders (and other? signal devices)
