I think a basic rundown of what I've seen is:

1. Remaining refinery is offline. Gas lines are enormous and either have or will take out the remaining supply on hand with no resupply from the offline refinery.

2. Durban is the largest port in southern Africa and (so I've read) the entrepot for 90% of trade into southern Africa. Durban has been destroyed in large part. The port is shut down. Refinery shut down as mentioned. Warehouse, malls, and retail looted. No way to restock those retail shelves.

Hard to imagine this doesn't become an even greater nightmare.

As a poster mentioned a few pages ago, India has a history of foreign intervention to protect the Indian diaspora. Durban is just across the Indian Ocean. If it escalates into a full-on race war, India might send it's fleet to secure Durban as a safe zone for Indians.

Taste of things to come - massive economic disruptions last year coupled with everybody focusing on race and becoming tribal let's see who ultimately makes it through these next few years.

We have a close friend that grew up in S Africa and my family was planning on taking a trip there with him next Summer. The friend was coming along to help show us around. I guess maybe that trip is out of the picture now....
