Go to a drag show at Scarlet in Honolulu and you'll see plenty of Marines there. Same was true at Ziegfield's in DC before it closed.

Gen Z is younger than I am. But I guess they are in their 40s now but I would think some of the older generals and search would not be part of this. Holy hell I'm getting old.

From my experience, the military (at least the Army) is significantly less conservative and less religious than the common perception of if would suggest. It still definitely leans that way, but the military is not some monolith that all thinks the same way.

And I would find this voluntary event far less disagreeable than being forced to use my day off on a mandatory family fun day. Even less effective at boosting morale than a division run.

I worked with retired military personnel from every branch for over a decade and I didn't find this among them at all but these were men that are now in their 50s and 60s and 70s so maybe that's why.

I retired in 1991, took a couple of years off, then went to work at the National Weather Service NEXRAD Doppler Radar Support Center in Norman, OK until I retired again in Sep 2010.

NEXRAD has always been a "Tri-Service" program, with NWS in the lead, but with a healthy number of DOD (AF and a few Navy folks) and FAA employees working at the support center. So from the early 90's until 2010 I worked alongside a lot of active duty AF members (and a few Navy) as well as quite a few retired AF folks.

I had several Lt Cols as my immediate boss (one had been a Capt under me when I was in the AF) and the Director was a retired AF Col. Fortunately, the folks in the section I worked in were almost all ex AF. So I can say that up until late 2010, the AF was pretty much the same as I had experienced during my 21 year career. The active duty and retired AF people I worked under and alongside were very mission oriented, organized, and hard working. The majority of NWS civilians I worked with did not share those traits, but a few did and it was a real pleasure working with them.

I will have to say that when Obama took over in 2009 NWS (from the top, anyway) became much more interested in promoting "diversity" of every variety - gender, race, and sexual orientation, including trans people. I think that was also about the time DOD started down that road, but I think at a lot slower pace.

From what more recent active duty folks have posted, Obama got the ball rolling on diversity and political correctness in the ranks during his tenure.
