Schumer, speaking to reporters following a closed-door caucus lunch, announced that he and Manchin had reached an agreement.

Under the deal, Manchin will provide the 50th Democratic vote on advancing the For the People Act later Tuesday, even though the measure will fall short of the 60 votes needed due to GOP opposition.

"We worked it out," Schumer told reporters.

It doesn't take a bill.

The filibuster is a Senate rule. All it takes is 50+1 to change it.

Right now, Manchin and Sinema have said they will not vote to change it; the latter pretty much telling the Democrats they're a bunch of hypocrites for wanting to change it now, but supporting it and using it to block Republicans over the years.

Republicans say the fact that President Biden would appoint the nonpartisan individual defeats the purpose.

It would also, McConnell said, "remove redistricting from state legislatures and hand it over to computers. Equally unacceptable. Totally inappropriate."

The "alternate" bill is the brainchild of Stacey Abrams, and she's been hitting Manchin left and right to support it.

Manchin is one (as of right now, he has not said he will vote to kill it), the other is Sinema who has said she is not going to do it and to even try shows how hypocritical the Democrats are.

Eliminating actual elections is worth paying whatever the price is to them, for the cheapest of Murk/Collins/Romney/Sinema. It will happen. We will have an open Communist Senator in the next 24-48 months.

The rule change to move it to 55 vs. 60 for a filibuster is almost inevitable right now, the debate is whether it happens in June or October. Going to just 55 to override a filibuster means the 'moderates' get more power, and claim to have reformed and preserved the filibuster itself.
