Tanya is flipping out over imaginary problems. The home schooled kids I've encountered tend to be well disciplined and would be an asset to most things. But she may not be able to repurpose what is supposed to be class time for UIL "coaching" *gasp* oh the humanity

Tanya is so offended that parents decide they can teach their kids better.
I am not offended that parents homeschool.
I have tutored many of their kids

But I do think if their kids need to be in UIL, it should be under the same restraints as everyone else on the team.

I do understand you need to lie about what I think about homeschooling. But is it really appropriate on a Sunday morning?

I wouldn't make that assumption. My cousin home schools her kids, and they are pretty sharp. I have seen hippie wannabes home their kids that turned out to be barely functional idiots.

Then again, I saw the same thing in public schools.

Our former church used to introduce all of the high school grads every year. Half the kids were home schooled and attending great colleges. I bet the public school parents in the crowd were triggered like Tanya.

My mileage varies.

They aren't always great students.

Sometimes they are terrible, spoiled brats never given discipline or taught to write above elementary or able to math beyond division

I am not triggered.

I simply think students need to be in school with the coaches to be in UIL

LOL. Homeschooled kids probably have better self awareness than you

Why?

I know kids who played hockey in high school and in Frisco there just 1 varsity team playing UIL hockey, the kids went to different schools in Frisco. No difference, their coaches didn't work for a school.

Because coaches keep tabs on the grades, attendance, and behavior of their players?

Should a HS coach be able to kick off a kid that cannot read but is homeschooled?

My kids are going to private school or will be home schooled. I'm basically at the point where I'm fairly certain that public school is like subjecting my kid to Russian Roulette.

Will they be fine at any school? Probably. Much better shot at not becoming a lunatic leftist or a leach by the options I'm considering though.

This legislation gives more choice to the parents which I applaud.

I'm sure the kids are going to go to the practices when and where they are held. These kids in other states aren't just showing up Friday night for the football game. This "where the coaches are" argument makes no ficking sense

I am curious if Tanya objects to the system we have here in our county school district in Tennessee, where there is a "co-op" between smaller schools that allows kids from one school to play sports for another school if their school does not offer that sport.

Yeah because there are never athletes in public schools playing sports even though they are complete imbeciles.

Tanya, your arguments really suck on this topic.

Will these homeschool kids be able to participate in UIL extracurriculars at any school in their district or just the one they are zoned for? If a student was at a magnet across town and moved to a homeschool curriculum, would that student then participate at their magnet or the locally zoned school?

Why should someone not at the school getting the state payment that can't read be dumped for someone who isn't getting the state payment and can't read?

Why should people under the advisement of these teachers not be at the school where they can see their grades, behavior, and teamwork?

Especially someone who bled all over this board all year about how bad it was for her kid. Her main argument started off as how she'd have to stop repurposing classroom time for "coaching". Seems very selfish.

Because they are not the students in the school of the coaches.

Coaches should know how they participate among others, what their grades are, and be able to work with them in the school day, every day

Like I said, the average home schooled kids is more academically prepared than the average public school kid. They are better qualified to earn a spot for extra curricular activities.

How do you know that they are better prepared?

I tutored homeschool kids and had some come to my classroom.

They were often super smart.

they didn't know how to be told no or lose.

I think if they need to be in UIL, put them in public school.

They need the same parameters as those with whom they will compete

The idea that home school kids are further ahead than public school kids is a myth. My wife has been teaching high school English for 26 years. In her experience, the home school kids that came to high school for UIL events were behind their counterparts on a net basis. Yes, there were lots of kids that were ahead of the public school classmates. But the ones that were behind were several grade levels behind.
There will be coaches that abuse this system. Kids that are dumber than a post will all of the sudden be passing.

If public schools suck so bad, homeschooling extras should be better as well. Create your own teams and move on.

She just said they lacked social skills.... exactly why extra curricular activities with their friends at the school their parents fund is necessary.

I think all school sports should be abolished, move it all to private clubs and organizations. It's a waste of money now given how all of these activities are available year round outside of school.

There is plenty they can do.

UIL used to be for kids in public schools.
Hopefully it will go back to that because I cannot imagine the lawsuits that will now happen

For someone flipped out more than anyone about her kid not being able to socialize, her input on this is quite sad. Embarrassing actually, but self awareness is not a strong suit with this one
