It amazes me that people really think they should be able to live a life of luxury on a minimum wage income. I fully agree that basic minimum expenses like rent, bills, and groceries should be covered by that wage. But you shouldn't be able to live fancy. And you sure as hell shouldn't be retiring at 65 as a cashier.
You CAN'T be serious. I had exactly ONE job that was minimum wage. ONE. My first. I was 16.
Actually, had I known about another place where I ended up working a year later, I never would have worked at the first place and made minimum wage. Most of my friends were making more than minimum wage before we graduated HS. In fact, if you weren't, you didn't say anything.
I had a job in college making $7/hr, then minimum wage increased to $7.25, so I started making $7.25. I asked to then start making $9/hr and my manager said that the company couldn't afford to pay everyone an extra $2/hr at the time. After several months I was able to get bumped up again above minimum wage, but it wasn't a bump to $9/hr like I wanted.
Moral of the story, if you're making $15/hr now and feeling pretty good, don't expect to start making $22/hr once minimum wage is increased. You'll just simply be making minimum wage again like you did when you were 16.
