The chatter seems to be popping up again around a FH/orion combo being used for a LEO rendezvous based lunar mission system.

Ill be curious to see, given how badly SLS is flailing and the push to cut waste, if that might finally come to fruition. Especially with Dragon well into safe/diverse operations. It would even keep ESA happy at this point.
Are they happy if their Gateway habitat and refueling modules lose their ride?

Are they going to be happy if they lose them with an SLS cancelation/failure? Or at minimal another decade+ of delay?

I did. Wish I'd bought more, but it might be better to just buy SpaceX at its IPO since DXYZ is a closed fund.

I think he's a great pick. Definitely an outsider, being from the private sector, but he's worked heaps with NASA and SpaceX already on his missions to space.

I think Trump generally loves visible things he can point at and say he did, so I would imagine NASA will get plenty of attention, and hopefully funding, in the next administration.

I'm excited about this pick. If you're going to get someone from the New Space ecosystem that is not Elon, Issacman is up there.

I'm liking the 'hot takes' I am seeing so far:

Dude is definitely 'into' aerospace/space/exploration:

For space enthusiasts, what a great era to witness. The strides over the next 5 years will be incredible. So glad to see someone with commercial experience that will reportedly push hard for actual progress at the helm of NASA.

Not sure we've touched on this here re: the Indian Ocean landings.

Apparently, SpaceX was able to recover parts of Starship from the last IFT per Felix from WAI.

I'm sure it would/will be. Congrats.

Maybe we need to re-look options to get Orion up/heading toward the moon if SLS goes down. FH might have the most power to get it headed there (nearly same delta V I think as a Martian trip somehow), but the aerodynamics with side boosters and man-rating would be a real pain.

Would New Glenn or Vulcan Centaur be able to do it? I have no clue, maybe some folks will find some analyses/videos discussing at some point this month.

Have real motives for colonizing mars been discussed here?

Wealth and talent have always flowed "west" / towards the most decentralized power with the highest bandwidth for individual liberty. Many reasons for that. But, there is no more West left on this planet.

The next great 'country' will be eX-earth.

Timeline is long and a lot can go wrong but that's how I see this playing out if successful

As always it will be those willing to risk everything to gain the most. The bold will make the earliest paths. They will gain fame and some fortune. The following waves will build on that and make more, until later the regulators show up and squash that as much as possible. Same pattern it has always been. But it will play out over decades and centuries. Excited to be at the front end of it and see it develop

Quote:

Experts discussed results of NASA's investigation into its Orion spacecraft heat shield after it experienced an unexpected loss of charred material during re-entry of the Artemis I uncrewed test flight. For the Artemis II crewed test flight, engineers will continue to prepare Orion with the heat shield already attached to the capsule. The agency also announced it is now targeting April 2026 for Artemis II and mid-2027 for Artemis III. The updated mission timelines also reflect time to address the Orion environmental control and life support systems.

Sounds like there won't be any more SLS launches, imho. Meanwhile:

One unfortunate consequence is that this will free up thousands of NASA dudes to get into Space X's business and make sure they "oversee" Space X into "success".

SpaceX has a somewhat notorious reputation for being a terribly stressful place for engineers to work (long hours etc). They also have a still growing need for a lot of engineers. I don't think it will have too many deleterious consequences, near term. Many of those frustrated SLS (Lockheed/Boeing) types have a visceral dislike of SpaceX too, and won't even consider applying there. I believe there is actually a bit of an aerospace engineering shortage, net, in the US.

I mean in a regulatory way. Like the way the pentagon calls into meetings trying to show Lockheed how to efficiently engineer despite not having passed an audit themselves for years.

Berger is saying there are other ways to get to the moon. Sounds like this involves a lengthy process of man rating a booster.

Is there a way to use the starship booster to send Orion to the moon since they are planning to crew rate starship?

I mean, they are going to man rate Starship right? Just stick Orion inside it.
