I know a guy from Brownsville and he owns property in Matamoros. He's a peculiar dude, but enjoyable to talk to and all about Starship. I asked him why he didn't go to Bagdad and watch a launch since he's real comfortable in Mex. He said he was going to do just that.

It can't be hard. HWY2 takes you all the way to the beach and then there's about 8 miles up to the mouth of the river. I'll find out if he did it and report back.

ETA - my parents were driving home from San Antonio and saw the contrail from Georgewest. So all of south Texas could have see a little something today.

I went to SPI to watch it. I was just barely able to see the booster light up before it went down behind people in front of me. But a while after that I heard two booms about a second apart, which I expected, thinking they were sonic booms of the booster coming down. But then around a minute later I heard two more booms that sounded identical to the first two. What would that be?

I don't think I heard the explosion because it sounded identical to the first pair of booms, which would have been sonic booms.

Was anyone there who heard the same thing?

If I were China, I'd have ships in the area observing the re-entry and splashdown of Ship, and would be ready to try and recover it if the opportunity presented itself...

I saw the booster venting in high altitude after boostback burn in the southern sky on the road to my house in Sienna. We were tuned in to the launch but was wondering if we could see anything in the sky. It was visible surprisingly high above the horizon. So some of the flight is visible from Houston area on a clear day like today.

Pretty wild. This and flight 2 are the only ones I haven't been in SPI in person but at least we caught a glimpse of this one.

Sonic booms echo within the atmosphere. I heard a fainter set of booms about a minute after the first loud ones during flight 5 from Isla Blanca Park.

Can you figure out the rough compass heading and degree above the horizon you were look at when you saw it?

Thought you space nerds might like this. I took my wife and kids to see Starship Flight 3 back in March. A few months later, my wife got me a replica Starship (the one that doubles as a torch lighter) and a Flight 3 patch … both are now on display in my office.

They said the tower was go and booster was no-go though

The release from SpaceX posted on their website actually stated the opposite after the fact. The booster sounds like it was operating as intended (great news!). If it was just the comm tower, that sounds like a really simple fix.

That's what was said yesterday on the broadcast, but SpaceX's blog post this morning (post above the one you replied to) is contrary to that. Perhaps in the heat of battle yesterday someone misunderstood or misinterpreted something.

Did the booster finally sink? Did not see resolution to that.

Speculation on my part here...

That could also be the reason for the initial "tower go for catch" to the changed status. It wasn't a booster issue, but the antenna tipping over (likely severing some cables or affecting some data?). Guy line snaps, but the antenna didn't tip immediately.

In Port Isabel we heard the sonic booms and the larger explosion.

We were able to see the booster maneuvering for what seemed like forever above us thanks to the thrusters operating. I bet it was just the difference in having the sun to our backs.

lol, I like to pull up to my friends house with like 10 minutes to go before launch but yesterday the street closest to his house was one way traffic due to people parking on both sides. The minutes ticked by as we had to get out of the way of 3 cars coming against us as we drove in.

We still made it with a solid 5 minutes to spare. I was surprised at the amount of traffic still going over the bridge to SPI that late before launch. But I guess that's RGV time. We left at around 7pm and there was still a steady stream of bumper to bumper cars coming off the bridge.

The afternoon launch was way more of a party atmosphere, super fun but next time hopefully we get to see a live catch.

The dew point should be dry again for good viewing if the next one is in January or February.

Oh also looks like USSPACECOM is once again being directed to Huntsville as its permanent location. I've lost count on how many times this has gone back and forth between Huntsville and the springs.

Really good article about what's changed from NASA's initial approach to commercial space companies when it first rolled out the COTS program to now.

tl;dr NASA is going back to old ways and treating fixed-firm price contracts as cost-plus, with excessive oversight and additional requirements. This is causing many commercial space companies to go broke or bail out due to risks of losing money on fixed-firm price contracts.
