We really need a controlled landing in daylight. Are they ready to try to land in the Gulf of Mexico?
They are going to catch the next(-ish) one right back at Starbase.

Id they try that with IF6, then they'll likely have to expend the booster since they only have one tower. I don't see them getting the booster on a transport that quickly?

30+ minutes of Starship 5 Launch and Booster Catch pron from the Everyday Astronaut

The 4 sequences of slow-mo beginning at 19:40 might as well be Hollywood level production from a Kubrich or Nolan film but in real life. Simply phenomenal.
Well at least one flateather claims it was all CGI.

Next year but who knows with Elon timing, and it may be dependent on the completion of the 2nd tower which is coming along. But who really knows with Elon timing

Also, during the launch broadcast I'm pretty sure Everyday Astronaut said a minimum of 3 hours from the booster landing until the Starship could return to the site (at least currently).

Conspiracies that require thousands of people with zero aligned interests to be in on the gig yet remain silent really don't have a great track record of coming to fruition. It's not like Elon is among the most polarizing figures in the world right now, so clearly no one would have any motive to out this big lie. As for the folks that actually believe them ... well no comment.

I really couldn't care less about what flat earther idiots think about the launch. What SpaceX is doing is all about looking forwards. Flat earthers are all about looking backwards. I've dealt with them a few times in the past. They are quite literally insane. They're either unable to understand extremely simple concepts or they are trying to BS others. And this guy trying to convince them is just wasting his own time. Time that could be spent watching Everyday Astronaut/Cosmic Perspective's video of the launch and catch a few more times.

Elon has said they want to catch the booster 3x first. I expect the 6th flight next month then another one Dec/Jan then the Starship catch early 2025.

Glen Reynolds and Michael Bloomberg (separately) call for cancellation of SLS in favor of a Starship-based program to go back to the moon:

Quote:

SLS requires Starship and the Lunar Gateway to get enough mass to the moon to make Artemis work. Starship can do the whole thing by itself. All things being equal, Artemis makes no sense.

But all things aren't equal. SLS costs $4 billion per launch just for the disposable rocket. SpaceX hopes to drive Starship costs down to $10 million per launch or less for a fully (and rapidly) reusable rocket.
Starship requires several launches to bring a full load of cargo to the moon because the second stage requires orbital refueling from more than one tanker. But SLS still costs 40 or 50 times what Starship would while still requiring Starship to complete Artemis and to get Lunar Gateway built.

Whatever becomes of Artemis specifically or the lunar program generally, there's zero case for SLS.
Anyway, mostly garbage comments as usual, but some are amusing. I'm not convinced the Orion capsule will really be any better than the Starliner, personally, and they have some heat shield issues with it still I believe.

That Nasa is actually planning to do that, but get the astronauts there via SLS is pretty mind blowing. Hopefully SpaceX can start regularly launching/catching/reusing starships next year, and prove themselves capable of refueling in orbit as well. Once that happens, serious discussions can occur, imho.

Yeah this won't be a political debate. SpaceX will start putting so many things into space and lunar orbit that everyone will be forced to ask "why aren't they just doing it".

And that's before the theorized starship 2, which would basically be able to take SLS fully stacked and put it on the moon

Starship V2 and V3 aren't theorized they are in design phase. It leans to your point SpaceX is on pace to lap SLS and other large payload launch providers.

The "why don't they just do it" is funny to me because earlier this year I finished a book series by Peter Hamilton in which NASA finally sends men to Mars, and when they get there and are about to step off the lander a portal/wormhole opens and a college aged kid in a "homemade" space suit steps out (think Musk in grad school with a bunch of fellow brainiacs) - and beats them technically to be the first humans on Mars.

But the point being NASA flew to Mars, spent billions, and took over a year to get there or something like that and these guys built this thing in their warehouse and walked through.

Oh cool, yeah I know they have been working on the incremental versions. I meant the crazy bigger-diameter concepts. Those are approaching Sea Dragon size

If Stage Zero is able to survive a launch/landing, it is just barely able to. A Stage Zero system that can handle an 18 meter diameter rocket will have to be next level. Probably next 2 levels.

Could have been good, but for some reason he made a big part of this video about the lens he rented and the work he put into tracking. That's just what you do to get good results and rather than cluttering your good work with messages about the work you did you shut up and let the result speak for itself.

No!
-but you have the data I need right?
Yes! But you can't have it
-so can I FOIA it?
No!

Phil has a bunch of good videos on Artemis, and a handful of other space topics over the past 9 months. A couple, for those interested. Pretty dispassionate but interested, and well done, imho…

Year 4 of him saying that exact line. The impetus of the creation of a phone would be the moment they start providing ride hail services through the Tesla app and Google and Apple start thinking they deserve 30% of the take. So it's gonna be awhile.

I think it is more likely that they start wanting a 30% cut of direct to phone starlink service.

I disagree here. 30% isn't unreasonable for an app store and making a phone is a stupid expensive and a massive undertaking. He can do it, of course. But I believe him when he says he doesn't really want to. I think it's a bandwidth thing and not a problem he wants to devote cycles to.

The impetus for him making a phone will be Apple or Google pulling apps from their stores, effectively deplatforming X, his payment service or maybe even other platforms he doesn't own.

I think he'll negotiate better rates publicly but privately gladly pay the fee, as long as the companies play fair, allow free speech, and aren't evil with respect to their AI implementations or privacy.
