We are right on the edge in OKC. Any idea what it runs per month for residential? And, how would starlink compare with traditional fiber and cable internet?
Honestly, for the cost I would probably elect to stick with traditional services right now. Starlink is great for remote locations that don't have access to the traditional fiber infrastructure but I personally wouldn't be signing up if I lived in a metro area.

Can you turn it off and on by the month?

So it's $750 investment, and that includes the first month.

Then I can take it to the deer lease and use it Oct (included), Nov (150), Dec (150), and Jan (150) for $450 for the 3 months?

They say it can be paused/unpaused monthly as needed. Haven't ordered or tried it yet

Yes I know somebody that does this for their RV at the beach.

Oh, speaking of... do you know where I can get a good price on deer rentals for my yard for next December?

Wonder if they'll end up being able to reuse them. My understanding is the fairings do not have any TPS, but rely instead on their relatively light weight and large surface area to slow them quickly.

I assume not, and think you are right. Plus, if it hit mach 15, it was way down range (past where they've done any recoveries before.

Hilarious. Musk is like a kid who found an old toy in the toy box and reliving the days. Amazing a guy with so much on his plate has time to play around with stuff like this.

It's good to be the king.

Thinking more... on a typical F9 mission they're jettisoned right after MECO. On a FH I think side booster cut off is at or asking the typical MECO point and center core is even a little bit after that. Factor in that these were all fully expended which would further delay those cutoff points... So for a direct to geostationary insertion, with fairing sep after 2nd stage engine start. Mach 15 doesn't seem out of the picture!

I'm betting having all the old stuff destroyed helped out a bunch too. Otherwise they would be having to do it anyway to get the new metal plate mounting right and plumbing the water.

And they aren't spending months "analyzing" what happened. They already know and already had a new fix in so it ultimately doesn't matter.

Can any of y'all in the know describe the construction of this metal plate affair? I am wondering if it's fabbed up with water passageways internal? A bit of flare along the edge to divert gasses up and away at a shallow angle from tank farm and other infrastructure? Do we know any specs as far as thickness (I thought I read somewhere 10")? Best guesses welcome.

I'm trying to imagine the metal plate and all I can think of is that it's directly below the worlds largest plasma cutting torch.

When Elon gets a weird idea in his head there is no stopping him. He's fixated on not having a flame diverted and deluge system.

I'm just wanting to know how big it is so I'll know about how far we can expect it to be flung on next launch…

All pics of the launchpad and the rocket need to have a scale reference.

Can someone go out there and place a $5 bill next to the pad so I can determine just how big it is?

But seriously, I can tell its big by the skytraks but it really helps to have some scale reference.

How big would the Epcot gold ball be next to this thing?

A banana would be a much better reference point.

Manufactured drama by the MSM to try and destroy all things Elon. They've been instructed to punish him for his twitter takeover.

True, but I am used to tuning out the MSM.

Zack Golden/some of the 'informed' observers/amateurs around the starship program seemed a bit emotionally disturbed almost by the launch pad damage.

Not having a flame trench is not just some arbitrary goal that Elon is stuck on. It has a purpose. Being that it removes considerable complexity to any launch complex they will need to build and therefore streamlining the construction of future launch sites.

The fact that there are so many engines on the booster increases the probability of an explosive mishap. On many rockets, this would seal the rocket's fate. So the design of the booster's engine heat shield and thrust puck to withstand these events has been a priority and is inherently mitigating the effects of high heat, pressure, and intense acoustic vibrations in the space between the pad and engines with respect to the booster itself; about 60 vertical feet. So the buildup of immense heat and pressure under the rocket at liftoff is of less concern to Starship when compared to other launch vehicles that do not design their rockets to survive engine RUDs. Elon has said that acoustics is of no concern to the payload since the engines are 400 ft from the payload. I suppose they have data to support this.

So the only issue is durability of the pad under the OLM. I am not sure where you are getting the Elon doesn't want a deluge system. What is understood to be implemented soon is a large steel plate that is water cooled with deluge pipes running through the plate before emitting the deluge water throughout a network of holes in the plate and a series of inward and upward facing nozzles surrounding the pad. Many parts are already on site in lay down yards. The system will be high-flow and operate at a greater pressure than that placed on the pad by the rocket fired at full power.

This should help to prevent destruction of pad concrete and limit debris with the added bonus of minimizing dust and reducing acoustic wave energy at liftoff. I also think Elon said they will shorten the sequence to ignite and throttle up engines to minimize wear on stage 0 during future launches.

From Elon's talk the other day, he said it's a metal plate with holes on top. So like a shower head it would shoot water up at the rocket. He says the water pressure would have to at least match the pressure of the engines. Not sure how that's possible.

MSM doesn't have to be instructed. That's the thing about leftists... unlike the right they all know the plan and are all on board with it.

Not just under the OLM. Remember boosters and starships will be flying back to the pad. While it's true it won't be as much thrust as a launch the area surrounding the OLM will still need to be hardened as well.
