For those less nerdy folks still curious about the Lagrange points, this image shows the relative topography on a gravity well map:

Sierra Space VP interview @ CES. They are again funding the crewed DC on their own, raised 1.4 billion privately, and it is not an ITAR vehicle, so could launch elsewhere.

YT link;

Apparently they will be the 2nd Vulcan Centaur launch this year, toward November.

Yeah as incredible as it was to see the Starships land (and fireball), it will be exponentially crazier to see them catch one.

Until that day, we got to witness at least half a dozen fireballs!!!

Y'all see the starships in Katy Perry world premiere video during half of the championship game? Let me try texags pic hosting…

LOL, everything about her is fake, of course, so why not that too.

I knew they used radios…but wow this is a complex data link.

Glad they have really smart people who figured all of that out. Amazing to think the Hubble is still basically corresponding over a 28.8 baud modem from the 80's.

The comms issue is why this one could never really be pulled off commercially, not in the next 50 years anyway. Having a dedicated DSN is not something private space will be doing for a long time to come. Even Musk will be beholden to NASA for a long time I'm afraid.

NASA is going to end up become space AT&T..... we should call them Comstar! See how many people get it without Google ;-).

Why would the private sector bother making a DSN? That would be a huge waste of money.

My family member on the vehicle recovery team has been back and forth to starship site since July, which has been the main focus. Last week they were told to be ready for back to back to back missions as they intend to make 50 Falcon launches this year.

Obviously all of those will not be Starlink launches, but it is feasible they double their current starlink fleet again in 2022.

That was my point. If neo-comstar didn't exist, there would be no DSN, at least until private Mars missions cranked up.

Way cooler than the launches, imho, even if a lot less power.

When's the next Heavy go up? Double RTLS might be the best thing SpaceX has ever done until the send a Starship

I think USSF 44 will be the next one, the payload has had some issues so it's just designated as "early 2022" for now.

Living 15 miles from McGregor I'll vouch for the 50 missions. Engine testing at an insane pace.

I agree with the post that was deleted. This thread is not a conspiracy thread. It's about Space X. If he wants to start another thread about aliens killing JFK on the moon then he can have at it.

Well, sounds like all is good for the JWST, for now but here is a good explanation of why the rest takes so long;

Reading the bit on the mirror manufacturing process, some of the mirrors were made and polished in 2011. The manufacturing process started in 2004.

I read that the mirrors move at the pace grass grows. Incredible.

Any bets on what the first image released will be?

The joke was they already released it...

In seriousness could that L+36d initial image mosaic be anything of scientific interest beyond the benchmark for further mirror and sensor calibrations?

Yeah I think the spacecraft was basically designed/planned in the mid 90's. We could probably have a multi-page thread lamenting how/why this took so long to get into orbit, but…it's what we've got, right now. Something about 'you go to war with the army you've got, not the army you want' comes to mind.

'potential' maiden flight. I'll believe it when I see it.

Apparently, on the good news front, the JWST was launched so well/perfectly they now anticipate they have enough fuel to run it for 20 years instead of 15. Also, all mirrors except A3 and A6 deployed 'just right' prior to pictures. Those two for some reason are adjusted differently.
