What about Fuddruckers? I always liked their burgers, but all the ones near me have shut down. Hasn't really changed much in 30+ years. Probably why I like it, and why they are shutting down.
Fudds had really gone downhill in the last 10 years... It used to be really good, but I went 3-4 times, different locations, in the past 10 years and their burgers just weren't what they used to be.

Only redeeming factor was keeping the nacho cheese for the fries.

My usual order was

Fried fish with the glop of tartar sauce
Green beans
Mashed potatoes with gravy (brown or cream, depending on my mood any particular day)
White roll
Apple pie
Glass of tea, typically sweet

Sometimes I also got something from the salad section, or a cup of jello

Went down hill after Pappas acquired it several years ago. Surprising, because all other Pappas restaurants, except the Dot Cafe, are excellent
That's a statement I've seen a few post on a previous thread. Sad that is the thought of some. When Pappas took over, Lucy's was on life support. The fact they kept it going all these years is amazing. Watched as they took over and all the canned vegetables were replaced with fresh food. Same with the meats as well frozen food was tossed out. Those changes did raise the price of the food but the quality went way up. I'll miss Lubys but it was a concept that has just died out.

Dang. There was a thread on GB but I used to love the Luby's on S Texas in Bryan. Broiled fish fillet, fried okra, salad and pecan pie w/coffee for dessert. There was a little, eccentric English lady who worked the beverage cart there and never failed to keep the iced tea and coffee topped up along with her banter. This was in the mid-late 80's.
Your post had me recall this lady at the Luby's location.

No, damn it. After my Grandma died this is my go to place for liver and onions!

I've got the recipe if ur able to cook

I have my Grandma's, but I will take yours also. I can cook, and so can my wife. Liver and Onions is just one of those that I never think about cooking. Sure do love it though. Thanks

My Dad HATES Liver and Onions...he can't stand the smell.

He told my Mom that if she cooked it, he'd divorce her.

The only time I ate it was when we'd go to Luby's. Guess no more L&O for me...

Remember, I have the full recipe book from 1980s.

I'll take requests on recipes, but be warned that the portions are huge.

Maybe I'll open a knock off Lubys in the future. I may not be able to survive not being able to get my favorite meal. Fried fish, mac n cheese, mashed potatoes, fried okra, roll, coke.

I have already lost many of my favorites:
-Felix queso and enchiladas ( I know El Patio has them, but not the same)
-Calamari from Ruggles at westheimer/montros
-Leche Quemada from Segovia Candy Co

Here is a sample of Lubys recipe:

Do you have their pinto beans recipe? Dinner rolls?

Do they have the recipe for that meringue that was like three feet tall? Not that I want any. I was just intrigued by the height.

Reddi-sponge And tastex?

It looks like Reddi-sponge is a dough conditioners sold in 50 lb bags.

The tastex seems to be margarine or something.

Well I guess that explains why regular homemade dinner rolls aren't as sturdy as Lubys.

Not really on topic specifically, but goes to struggling restaurants and we get more traffic on F16 than the Metroplex board, so I'm cross posting here as well for any of you Dallas folks:

Fellow Ags, Braindead Brewing in Deep Ellum is opening back up tomorrow for dine in. Like many places, it's been a rough few months, but one of the owners has been like a brother to me since high school, so I'll be there tomorrow. I'll buy you a beer if you come as well, I'll be the dude in the A&M shirt.

One of the things Luby's did with their Liver and Onions that I haven't seen mentioned here.

After you sliced the liver, they would soak it in a salt brine over-night.

Luby's had THE BEST coconut cream pie and it had that meringue monstrosity on top of it.
So damn good.

Many of the Lubys around San Antonio had closed due to the pandemic. I expect some may never reopen. The Lubys at 281 and Bitters was open today and very busy. I got a chopped steak combo there for old time's sake.

I wonder if the Hasslochers (Jim's) have thought about buying up some Lubys assets. If anyone knows about keeping a struggling restaurant chain running it is them.

That is exactly what I ordered as a kid and in college when going to Lubys. Exact order (less the gravy).

While at A&M I would sometimes take my grandmother to Lubys after church. I wish I had done it every Sunday.

For me, the other way around. Grandparents lived close (too close) to A&M and always wanted to take me to Luby's on Sundays. My roommate worked there and I had heard the horror stories.

They had never heard of Burger King, so I took them there. They loved Burger King and it became their go-to place. Although I drove many many times to their house for "Sunday dinner" which Southerners know meant lunch at noon. Will say my grandmother did make good fried chicken though. During the winter, chicken and dumplings.

I never even considered taking them to Chicken Oil because that was my Sunday hangover place. Didn't need anymore added grief. It was the late 70s. My grandparents generally would have never been supportive of most of what I did in college. And certainly not my hangover cure.
