I have found that Jim's serves a liver and onion plate comparable to Lubys.

Lubys had heart disease before the virus. It was just a matter of time even without the Covidity.
Food wasn't bad though their model was pretty (and I hate this word) outdated. No one under 40 had stepped foot in a cafeteria style place unless their grand parents had taken them there. Heck, even my parents, who were the kings of this style through the '80s, quit eating at these places in the early '90s.

Lubys also had some bad luck with that incident in Killeen in 1991. Its too bad that it took the deaths of 23 people just to START the discussion of a concealed handgun license in TEXAS of all places. However, they also had some self inflicted issues themselves by charging more for their food than it was worth.

In the end, I think most honest people would have to agree, if you sat down and compared the quality of the something you liked at Lubys to another home style restaurant, it was at least nearly as good. But then, betamax was better than VHS...

Remember, I have the full recipe book from 1980s.

I'll take requests on recipes, but be warned that the portions are huge.

Maybe I'll open a knock off Lubys in the future. I may not be able to survive not being able to get my favorite meal. Fried fish, mac n cheese, mashed potatoes, fried okra, roll, coke.

I have already lost many of my favorites:
-Felix queso and enchiladas ( I know El Patio has them, but not the same)
-Calamari from Ruggles at westheimer/montros
-Leche Quemada from Segovia Candy Co

Here is a sample of Lubys recipe:

Back when I was a math grad student, for a couple of years or so many of the math grad students would go to Luby's nearly every Sunday for supper. Occasionally we would go somewhere else, but maybe 80% of the time it was to Luby's.

When I graduated and moved to Houston, those Sunday night suppers at Luby's were one of the things that I really missed.

That's nice, but I don't like eating trash organs.

Well, except for menudo, but that's different.

Went down hill after Pappas acquired it several years ago. Surprising, because all other Pappas restaurants, except the Dot Cafe, are excellent

damn. Now where in the hell do I go to get the high school cafeteria dining experience?
I loved high school cafeteria food, as well as Duncan food, Sibsa food, Army mess hall food and even C - Rations (too old for MRE'S, but I probably would have liked them, too).

Of course, this probably explains my round shape, today.

Sad that Fuddruckers is done. Their burgers were always good, though the condiment bar would give a health inspector a heart attack. But any place that would let your pour an unlimited amount of nacho jalapeno cheese sauce on your fries is good in my book.

One of my first jobs in high school, Tyler Tx.

Started as a dish washer, wound up weekend butcher, if you could call it that.

Dishwasher was a steamy hot nasty job, I could probably still smell my clothes if I could find them. Then the swill that came out the rinse cycle was picked up by some farmer for the pigs, yuk! That was orrible stuff after fermenting a few days.

Sliced op the frozen cod block with the belt saw, scared the hell out of me at first. Sliced them up, put 'em on a flat pan, smothered some mayo and paprika then in the oven.

Then there was the prime rib, that was easy enough, after trimming some fat, adding some spices and in the oven.

The liver, now that was nasty, still won't eat it, Had to peel the skin off (membrane) cut out the big veins and then slice it up in the same band saw, after cleaning, of course.

My boss, assistant manager was a Ag with a landscape degree wanted me to forget about architecture school, said I could be manager soon enough....no thank you!

Fuddruckers wasn't what it was in the 90's but dang...it was good. Went to the one in College Station a bunch and grew up on the Willowbrook Mall location.

For me, the problem is, nobody else does what they do. Where else can you go to get good vegetables? Most restaurants just don't have the same kind of selection, and they aren't made the same way.

I've never had food I didn't like there. The fried fish, fried chicken was excellent, the enchiladas were off the charts.

I know they had crept up in price over the years, and that kept us away. That's really why they are going away more than anything. Most of us who really like them just don't go very often.

They were a go to for Black eyed peas on New Years Day ever since the Black Eyed Pea closed.

We're going there for dinner tomorrow before they close for good.

Pappas was probably the only thing that kept them alive as long as this. My dad owned Luby's stock in the 1980's He said it had a hell of a good dividend. He sold it when they cut the dividend. That was before Pappas bought them. They were already on a downward trajectory 25 years ago.

Dang. There was a thread on GB but I used to love the Luby's on S Texas in Bryan. Broiled fish fillet, fried okra, salad and pecan pie w/coffee for dessert. There was a little, eccentric English lady who worked the beverage cart there and never failed to keep the iced tea and coffee topped up along with her banter. This was in the mid-late 80's.
How long has she been there?

We went to CS for a football game in about 1972. Game was going to be at about 2, dad herded us to Luby's to eat an early lunch, as soon as they opened. He always wanted to get to the game about 4 hours early.

For about 30 minutes, we were THE ONLY people in the whole darn place. The tea cart lady dutifully made her rounds of the whole empty restaurant, and then would swing by and ask us if we needed something. She seemed thrilled when, on the third round, we finally accepted her offer.

Side note, it was a Baylor game, and the Baylor Band showed up before we were done. I remember, because a high school friend was in their band. He spotted us through the windows and was thrilled to see someone from home.

Darn it, I liked Luby's. Reasonably priced lunch place I could get in and out of quickly and get a few green veggies along the way.

Of course, it was never crowded which should have been the first clue that it wasn't going to last forever.

I love these replies...

My Momma and I would pick my Granny (great grandma) after school on Fridays to get her hair done then go to Lubys...she would always get square fish patty with whatever...I would get CFS or hand cut roast beef, greens or spinach, fried okra, tomato/cucumber salad or carrot salad, roll/garlic bread, and flan...i loved the lady who would come around with the cart and ask, "More tea?"...

ETA...i didn't see the post above mine...sad situation.
