1. The feds don't usually indict someone unless they've got a solid case.
2. This was investigated by US Postal Inspectors. If there's one group in DC you don't want looking into what you're doing, it's them. They are extremely non-partisan, thorough, and by the book. If they find evidence you did something wrong, you're proper ****ed.

I love the US Postal Inspection Service. They will take even minor cases seriously.

About 25 years ago, someone tried to scam me with a bogus weekly newsletter subscription. What was in the newsletter was obviously just one paragraph summaries of stories in a few of the prominent business magazines. Of the newsletters they sent me, I don't think that I ever saw anything that I hadn't already seen in the three or four business magazines that I read at the time.

Eventually it all blew over after I refused to answer them at all. The last thing I wanted was to give them a signature they could use to forge my signature on bogus subscription papers.

A year later, they tried again. This time I went to the local post office and asked what to do about it. They said to just forward everything I receive to the "Office of the Postal Inspector" (no address or stamps required) along with a brief explanation. So everything I received from them for two or three months were forwarded to the Postal Inspectors with a brief explanation on the back.

The Postal Inspectors didn't have enough complaints for a criminal case, but after they got in touch with the scammers, I never heard from the scammers again.
