I cannot think of another company more closely representative of a monopoly than google within the confines of their market: widespread distribution of information via their search engine.
sounds like wealth inequality in the search engine marketplace......

There is a case to be made for why monopolies can actually be good for consumers, and also some spaces, like social media, can better with monopolies than without. That is if the monopoly holder behaves ethically. But now the tech monopolies are censoring users left and right and take sides in politics.
It's not human nature to behave ethically when there is no legit reason to do so. Eventually they will surrender to temptation because there are no consequences. A benign monopoly does not remain benign for very long.

Glad DOJ is acting on this.

It needs to be broken up.

Search Engine
Software (Android/Chrome)
Hardware (Pixel, Nest, FitBit, etc.)
YouTube
Cloud/GMail
Advertising
Google Fiber

Same for Facebook/Meta.
"If you will not fight for right when you can easily win without blood shed; if you will not fight when your victory is sure and not too costly; you may come to the moment when you will have to fight with all the odds against you and only a precarious chance of survival. There may even be a worse case. You may have to fight when there is no hope of victory, because it is better to perish than to live as slaves." - Sir Winston Churchill

Fantastic thread bump, and I miss Titan's voice here. He was one of the best posters this board has ever had.

For the most part I think F16 made the right call on this one.

I'm not sure how I feel about this because part of me says let the market decide what companies are successful. But when you look at this list, if there ever was a monopoly Google is it. Based on what the gov't has done in the past you would assume they would order them broken up.

Some of you are too young to remember, but the internet worked better 20 years ago. Yes, we've had enormous technological advances, but the fundamental "information superhighway" has been degraded, monetized, and curated by Google.
94chem,
That, sir, was the greatest post in the history of TexAgs. I salute you. -- Dough

MicroSoft. Apple.

then there are electronic voting systems, with over 40% share of the market. That DOJ not onle fostered but mandated.
