So I can't buy cheap Chinese made crap for awhile.

Just going to make an already bad situation worse. I've recently encountered system wide shortages of items supplied by China, especially anything made of metal (weightlifting equipment, cage wire, just about anything at Harbor Freight, etc.)

Empty shelves at HF are not something I ever expected to see. But if it had to happen, then it couldn't have happened to a better bunch of commies.
I understand that. But if such a catastrophe did occur, more manufacturing would move out of China and never go back. China would be crippled financially for a long time to come.

This country went through rationing for most of WWII and then had a lag in switching over from war time to consumer goods manufacturing. It's not the end of the world as we know it, is my point and could very well have an upside long term.

The only thing in the dam's favor is many Western engineering firms were involved in the design and construction.

Western engineer's whose opinions about flawed hydrology and the storm level event the dam could actually withstand being brushed aside and ignored.

Initial party design team stated it could withstand the 5,000 year flood. Actual design practice and review puts it 200 year flood.

Oh I wasn't arguing your point at all. I was just trying to make the point along with you and other posters that we're already experiencing shortages, but we're about to have some shortages that will cause some serious short term pain. Probably be good for the rest of the world if disaster strikes China, as you said.

I want China to take it in the shorts because of corona as much as anyone.

That said, here's what happens if the dam goes:

* 400 million Chinese dead, a quarter of China's population.

* the heart of Chinese electronics manufacturing gets submerged. Say goodbye to new consumer electronics here in the USA for some time

* Wuhan bioweapon lab flooded. Whatever else they have in there gets out, good luck rescue workers

* One nuclear power plant gets flooded ***ushima style.

Is this blatant hyperbole, or are you seriously suggesting 1/4 of the Chinese population will die if this dam fails?

If the dam was showing signs of deflection that bad in 2018 it would have failed by now. That's got to be a photoshopped pic.

Concrete structures don't have that much play especially when they are designed to hold back millions of gallons of water.

Insert famous Shakespeare quote here. A start?

Custer comes to mind. CCP would have its hands full. One guy stopped a tank back when.

That's just bad photo stitching. China randomizes their GPS data positions to prevent people from knowing the true location of anything. That image is google trying to fit the real world satellite data into where China is lying about where things actually are. No I'm not making any of this up.

It looks like because in the inlet ports of the dam are underwater, the oil is collecting up top like grease on the top of a stew.

Yum.

Had a friend back in the day (friend of my boyfriend at the time) who was a civil engineer specializing in sewers and waste management. When he talked about the "floatables" versus the "sinkers" and how some turds float and others settle on the bottom... apply that to Yangtze in China?

Crap on top? Crap on the bottom? Both?

Chongquing is upstream of the dam. We started our Yangtze River cruise there. Multiple millions live there. It's very steep going down to the river. Who knows if that video is real, but I zoomed in on the light posts and they match those in the fotos I took there. Main reason I wanted to capture the photos was to show how they build massive high rises five or so at a time. Two or three years later, they change to a slightly different Soviet style and quickly pop up another cluster

NO AMNESTY!

in order for democrats, liberals, progressives et al to continue their illogical belief systems they have to pretend not to know a lot of things; by pretending "not to know" there is no guilt, no actual connection to conscience. Denial of truth allows easier trespass.

Dam authorities had already discharged water on June 29 in anticipation of the flood. They maintained that flooding which came after that in downstream cities was not caused by the discharge but was rather due to poor drainage systems.
So they knew downstream had "poor drainage systems" before the release? How dumb are the Chinese people if they buy that load of BS?

Its actually pretty likely. They use those ****ty black plastic drainage pipes for street drains.
People also dump gutter oil down it all the time.

Don't think that their standards are like the US....
Edit: a lot of chinese are superstitious that this year was going to be a disaster year, so this years events haven't really helped the CCP.

This is far West China, Yichang area. Hubei Province. Very rural, superstitious, uneducated, strong support for CCP. In many ways these folks are similar to plantation democrats. They have no reason not to believe what the man is telling them.

Don't get me started on Wuhan....

They've been building other dams on the Yangtze to provide additional storage, power, and flood control, but it will take decades to complete. Those dams should have been built first, and the Three Gorges Dam last.
"If you will not fight for right when you can easily win without blood shed; if you will not fight when your victory is sure and not too costly; you may come to the moment when you will have to fight with all the odds against you and only a precarious chance of survival. There may even be a worse case. You may have to fight when there is no hope of victory, because it is better to perish than to live as slaves." - Sir Winston Churchill

What's the status of upstream dams?

A waterfall effect will take down the whole system if only one fails upstream. Do we think everything was built so we'll? The chart on page 2 makes me think any one failing would send a tidal wave downstream. With that level of elevation and holdback, nothing would survive. And I have zero faith in the engineering and even less faith in Chinese construction shortcuts and corruption.

Huge shortage of pharmaceuticals if the dam fails. Wuhan/hubei supply the majority of the worlds drugs. The dam failing might just be what causes drug makers to shift production back home.

That would cause immense suffering in the US, as China would halt all exports to preserve supply for domestic first, and gouge all exports. Just like PPE.

This is a huge wakeup call for industry to relocate elsewhere, fast.

The CCP is not monolithic. Were you better versed in reading the text of the news releases (boring as they may), you would notice Xi's increasing unpopular position within the CCP. There are voices challenging him already. None strong enough to take him down (yet), but powerful enough he cannot get rid of them.

To be honest. I am waiting to see the results of these events. The undertone of this event in China has a lot of extremely uncomfortable implications for Xi, especially if the damn does break if you know your history/culture. Look for news regarding the 13th People's Congress (national) next year...

Be close in watching the changes of leaders of the Central Military Committee and Politburo Standing Committee of the Communist Party of China. Especially if a PSC member leaves and those below him end up getting arrested.

Edit: Wrong word, grammar.
