We have lost the ability to think critically and logically about anything before publicly stating an opinion.

In addition, we are not allowed to think critically about anyone in any perceived protected class. The truth is theirs to speak about without question, because to question is to blame the victim.

If we take the second point above away, and examine the facts as they were presented to us from the initial report, we have a claim that has so many far fetched components that they stretch credulity to beyond the breaking point.

At the very least - at the absolute minimum - refrain from concluding something as fact for the first 48 hours.

To add to the above, we don't have even the pretense of objective journalism any more. No longer to we have a lone reporter at an anchor desk who reads the news.

We have tweedle dumb and tweedle dumber who must express horror after reporting whatever headline is bleeding enough to lead. Even assuming that the actual report is written without bias, anchors and others are expected to emote and opine about the 'news' as they report it: "Gosh, Jane, that is just horrific!" "Yes, Jimmy, I am completely verklempt and in tears!"

There are three reasons people don't question this kind of thing from the start despite many red flags/holes in the story:

• Their political bias, left leaning, they want it/know it to be true because MAGA hat = KKK hood
• They are virtue signalling which is the easy path to take (you can always come back and say you were duped so its better to "get out in front" with a good old fashioned virtue signal)
• Those that might question it early would be labelled by the folks from the first/second bullets as racist homophobic bigots

This explains probably 99% of the reason a hoax like this can gain traction.

I think you make some good points but there's a little more to it. There is a burning desire by people in this country for this horrible thing to be true because they have worldview that need upholding. This would have provided years of fuel if true and people needed it to be true. We've had two years of how things are so much worse in this country and yet, no evidence. This was going to be the thing that proved how bad things are (just like Covington kids were).

Without some documentation of premeditated hoax, there is room for doubt.

You can't prove a negative, that he did not get attacked.

You can only say, it wasn't the two people on video who did it.

This paragraph reveals quite a lot in my opinion. Smollett was looking for attention for something. Some stories said he was trying to gin up attention to avoid being fired from Empire while personally I think he was doing this to help his good friend Kamala Harris get her anti-lynching legislation passed. Looks like he tried the letters first and when that failed to generate any attention, he took it up a notch. he and his family are activists and this is the type **** hard core activists pull.

Not necessarily. The Tawana Brawley white gang rape hoax that made Al Sharpton was essentially the same as this one with a couple of minor details changed. It might be 30 years until the next time but because these hoaxes are perpetrated by stupid people it probably will still be obvious enough to see through it all.

I've been beating that drum for a while...I think it was threefold, keep from getting written off, juice for his concert and fame in general, and fuel for Kamala's anti-lynching bill.

Since he's a narcissistic sociopath I'd think juicing his career was the largest factor and the others were secondary. I also think the lack of coverage for the letter outraged him.
