The US gets to pay for a lot of R&D for cutting edge drugs. All the socialized medicine countries set price ceilings. I'm guessing that this price covers the marginal cost of producing another unit. In order to pay for the R&D, pharma has to squeeze juice from the only country allowed to pay.

I'm no fan of govt contracting, I use to be in the middle of it, but the main issue is the requirements put in BY the govt to meet their specs. You have to spend 3 months and $40K just to give them a work plan to review of the work you will have to provide. Then they comment, you answer, you produce multiple deliverables, then you might be able to start your project.

Not even going to go into the monthly progress reporting, billing, etc. Contractors are mostly playing by the rules set on them. They aren't gouging, just complying.
