If she was "actually" poor (below the poverty level) I could realistically see not knowing as they aren't a common thing in poor areas. However we know she's not poor and grew up a fairly affluent area.

Yes. Garbage disposals are illegal in NYC. Not sure about the garbage union but do know there were legitimate concerns about the effect on the sewer system.

I was living up north in the early 70s and was in NYC during a garbage strike. Times Square stunk to high heaven.

I suspect the sewage lines and infrastructure in large areas of NYC would have a hard time handling all the stuff going down disposals. I'm not shocked at all that she didn't have one. Not knowing what one is, that's another story all together.

The interesting thing is all the illegal plumbing and carpentry repairs that go on in New York. Pay the contractors in cash, they sneak parts and supplies into the building. Avoid fees, regulations, and taxes that way. Just don't get caught.

A fuse box and garbage disposal really got her going.
