Improvement in lifespan is almost entirely a function of reduction in childhood mortality.
The idea that 40 was an old man back then is incorrect. There has been some improvement in lifespan of those that make adulthood, but not that drastic.
I do agree that a much higher percentage of children used to die - although Robert F Kennedy Jr said something about endorsing Trump in part because RFK was promised an investigation into why American children are so unhealthy.
