Technically correct, but intentionally misleading.
I spent 6 weeks at Quantico in a PLC commissioning program, and decided I would not continue in the program. I was enlisted in the Marine Corps Reserve for that period, as a sergeant, for pay purposes and UCMJ only.
Technically, I was a Marine.
In reality, oh hell no, I was nowhere near being a Marine.
I could truthfully speak my discharge from the Marines as a sergeant, my time in Quantico, carrying an M-14, doing the obstacle course, etc. etc.
Do I? Of course not. At least without the listeners being fully informed that I was a lowly officer candidate, it was for six weeks one summer, and the only "combat" I saw was fighting over space around the motel pool when we had leave.
