Had to dig up the opinion piece from 2019.

Bottom line assertion: cameras, especially old film cameras, were designed to render white people's faces the correct color when doing color photography. Black people's photos were not the right color. When blacks and whites were photographed together, black faces came out too dark.

Obviously, this is intentional racism, not companies adjusting their product to their biggest customers, and nothing at all to do with the physics of gathering light in a lens, and the impossibility of getting light and dark surfaces to render equally in a single photo.


Cameras don't do that, though.

In film cameras, color balance primarily happens when you turn negatives into photos. Not when the pictures are snapped.

In digital cameras, color balance is set by the photographer, not the camera.

In both cases, it's human interaction with the tools, not the tools.
