Smoking shows how the government has no need to worry about public habits.

The social attitude of smoking changed without now oppressive regulation. Indeed, regulations started only after enough of society had changed it's attitude about smoking that the government COULD be oppressive.

Yes, the government forbid advertising (TV first, then print) - but the public changed on its own with no force being needed. The force started when smoking was below 20% of the population anyway.

It's hard to remember, but Rob and Laura Petrie smoked. Sheriff Andy smoked. Saw a pic today of Don Meridith in the locker room smoking after the 1967 NFL championship game loss. In 1982, Lamar Muse started Muse Airlines and made non-smoking - we all wondered if the airline could survive.

Get the government out of society and society does just fine.

I do not miss that. And my parents were wonderful people but they smoked then, as did many people from that generation, so I even had it in my house. Yuck.

We have a beer/wine booth at our Mediterranean Festival at our Orthodox Church and I believe they sell the same at the Greek Festivals in Houston and Dallas

Lucy and Ricky smoked, too.

Even had Chesterfield cigarettes as their sponsor on I Love Lucy

But that was normal for the 1950s. Even shows in the 1970s.

I got my first job out of college in 1989, and at that point in Houston people could still smoke in their offices. It wasn't till the mid or late 90s they took that away.
