The problem is that with modern society, we have total instant gratification.

If you are having pain, there is a pill or an edible for that.
We can keep people alive for years that never would have survived a week.

The miracles of the modern world shield us from all sorts of danger, stress, injury, pain, and death.

Being able to deal with stress, control your base urges, etc is like a muscle. It has to be exercised. Also, experiencing pain for yourself is the only way to develop empathy for other's pain.

We live in a world without empathy for this reason.

It is a very brutal mixture of things that our way of life has conditioned us out of and is leading to a more and more emotionally erratic and brutal society as time goes on.
