Licenses to run a taxi business. (Taxis have long been monopolies.)

I'm guessing Uber is illegal in NYC?

No I understand. Was just curious - can't believe the cab companies didn't win the battle there.

They are literal medallions on the hood of the cab and historically only the yellow cabs in NYC are medallion cabs.

Others cannot be yellow and are forbidden from picking up fares in the city - they may drop off however.

Green cabs for example from NJ can bring you into the city but not pick up a return fare - thus they charge you double for the tolls.

Other colors are typically gypsy cabs and operate illegally.

The medallions are limited to 13,000 or so..... and only 18% are still individually owned. Most are company owned and/or leased out to drivers.

Per New York Post article last October. "At a recent auction in Queens, 46 medallions were reportedly sold for an average price of $186,000 each. The winning bidder was a Connecticut-based hedge fund, MGPE, which is expected to lease the medallions to a fleet owner."

Plenty of business for both apparently.

Some people just like the ease of hailing a cab when you are on the street. I've never had a problem getting one inside of a minute or two at the most. Anywhere in NYC. I've been there 20 times in the last 3 years or so.

They've also made it near impossible to get an uber at La Guardia - the Uber pickup location is a shuttle ride away. they do not allow pickup at the terminal due to congestion and ongoing construction. uber can dropoff of course. So some things like that make cabs persist.

Or if you need to arrange rides, like for more people, or don't want to be on the street for example because of safety or you are alone Uber is good way to go. My daughter is in NYC and she will Uber when she is out late. So she only steps outside when she knows the ride has arrived.

Most tourists still rely on cabs.

A license to operate taxis in NYC. And were high priced items at one time.

Maybe not based on the link above.

It's basically a bond to keep small non-established start-ups from succeeding and competing. I think in D.C. their was a news story about the medallion and they can go as high as $1 mill.

Imagine a 10 car taxi fleet putting up $1 million to give $40 rides. They end up having to work under someone like yellow cab who essentially becomes their pimp.

..same concept with bourbon barrels ...start-ups can't afford a new barrel each time.

I'll tell you one thing this raid has accomplished, if nothing else. It's pushed muellers little party waaaay down the road. It's extended it to the midterms and beyond, because they'll claim they got a s*** ton of information and it will take them months and months to sort it out. Just in case anybody was thinking the OIG report was going to end it. This raid was to counter it.

Glad to see Mueller is now concerned about taxi medallions in NYC.... this whole thing has gotten extremely out of hand. I'm convinced now that Trumps going to go down somehow and some way. Completely unbelievable that we have powers at be now that can just completely overturn a fair election. So ****ing frustrating.

Are we to believe that taxi medallions are of such import that the SDNY, with the blessing of the deputy Attorney General, no-knock raided the personal attorney of the President of the United States?

In fact, what WOULD be important and crucial enough to justify and trigger such unprecedented action? Who paid a NDA?

No way. There better be something friggin' big here, and that evidence that justified it better be eye-popping.

Well, Cohen's lawyers should have a copy of each of the warrants as they are left with one at each location. Or at least that used to be the rule. Things are so out of whack these days you never know.

You mean Trump granting Cohen a pardon?

Don't see how the use of a Presidential pardon becomes obstruction of justice, just because POTUS has an "R" after his name.

Yes.

I don't see how firing the FBI director becomes obstruction of justice either. However, Trump does have an "R" after his name.

I heard that there were some banks recently that went under whose primary business was issuing loans with the medallions used as collateral. Uber and Lyft have cut into that space so significantly that the value of a medallion is way down.

Quote:

1) The FBI raid on Cohen...So - we're seeing more information today.
Good rule of thumb - give it 24-48 hours before reacting, making assumptions & acting irrational

2) As usual, The liberal MSM was giddy as they thought this was yet another story that would FINALLY take down the evil Drumpf

3) The MAGA/Conservative base was RAGING mad that this was overreach by Mueller.
There were more irrational calls to FIRE Sessions, Rosenstein, Mueller, etc.
ALL without knowing ANY of the DETAILS...

4) One BIG Twitter influencer called this a "SESSION'S COUP."

5) 24 hours later, more information is leaked. -- First we learned Rod Rosenstein personally approved the FBI raid. BIG MOVE. Why?

6) It has nothing to do with the Trump Campaign/Russia investigation - AND whatever Cohen did was something much LARGER than just a payment to a porn star

7) FBI search warrant on Cohen covered taxi medallion ownership
http://thehill.com/blogs/blog-briefing-room/382482-fbi-search-warrant-on-cohen-inquired-into-taxi-medallion-ownership
FBI search warrant on Cohen covered taxi medallion ownership

8) Remember the story, last year, that Cohen sold 4 NY apartment buildings for Cash?
http://www.mcclatchydc.com/news/politics-government/congress/article180701541.html
Trump associate Cohen sold four NY buildings for cash to mysterious buyers

9) There was knee jerk reactions & hysteria yesterday. Calls to Fire Sessions, Mueller, Rosenstein, etc. Why? Everyone's allowed to have feelings, but why the rush to assumptions? Why the hysteria?

10) After 24 hours, we're seeing more info related to Cohen raid (most likely PERSONAL business dealings):
Taxi medallions
Real estate sales for cash (reported last year)
cash payments to porn stars
This all points to money laundering, tax evasion, bank fraud, wire fraud, etc

11) NO proof that ANY of this is tied to Trump (including the porn star payments) - BUT the liberal media goes into a frenzy.
What usually happens? These stories blow up in the Democrats & Liberal Media's face...every time

12) TDS irrational emotions about Trump NOT based on reality. This has infected the Left.
I'm seeing similar emotional irrationality spread to the MAGA base w immediate rush to judgments, irrational demands to FIRE SESSIONS & we STILL don't have the FULL story on Cohen!

13) WAIT for all the info. At first it's NEVER what it seems & there's ALWAYS more to the story. We have more info today & we'll see more tomorrow. Give it time & let this play out.
This has NOTHING to do with Trump & as usual, will lead to more liberal tears.

Patience

This is an interesting speculation. I haven't seen any recent news concerning Cohen's civil suit against Fusion GPS and Glenn Simpson -- it was filed on January 9, 2018 and seeks $100 million in damages. A link to the lawsuit:

My guess is which speed reader will be delivering the info., and how fast. It will be endlessly entertaining.

I suspect it's going to be released in sections, as it's likely to contain more names than the Bible, and longer than a West Texas train!
Hate is how progressives sustain themselves. Without hate, introspection begins to slip into the progressive's consciousness, threatening the progressive with the truth: that their ideas and opinions are illogical, hypocritical, dangerous, and asinine.
This is backed by data.

https://theconservativetreehouse.com/2018/04/10/trump-appointed-doj-attorney-not-involved-in-fbi-raid-authorization-of-personal-lawyer-michael-cohen/

Quote:

According to updated information the Trump appointed U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of New York, Geoffrey Berman, was recused from any aspect surrounding the FBI raid of President Trump's personal attorney, Michael Cohen.

One of the key points made by those who defended the highly charged political raid of Michael Cohen's home, office and hotel suite was that a President Trump appointed U.S. Attorney signed off on the raid. That deflection point is now demonstrably removed.

Quote:

(Via ABC) [] Berman was not involved in the decision to raid Cohen's office because of the recusal, two sources familiar with the matter tell ABC News.
The recusal was approved by senior Justice Department officials who report to Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein, the sources said. Rosenstein himself was notified of the recusal after the decision was made.

The raid of Cohen's office was handled by others in the office of the U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of New York and approved by a federal judge.

What I don't know is: Did Berman recuse himself or was he recused (for instance, at the request of Mueller since Berman is a Trump appointee)?
