If the Democrats impeach Trump, then there will be probably 70-80 votes in the Senate to remove him from office which is more than enough.
70-80?

I'm a little on the fence about that number but I suppose I could see enough Republicans going along with it in favor of Pence in the oval office with the idea that he will be easier to control/push around. But I still think that would be a really bad look across the party and would crush comparatively broad-based support.

That will only work if there are some corresponding high profile perp walks, in my view. Strzok, McCabe, Comey for starters.

Can you elaborate? I'm not following...
Sessions cannot be fired by Trump as the Senate will not confirm a replacement
Why wouldn't they?
Because most Republicans in the Senate want Trump gone as badly as the Democrats do. The only difference is they cannot publicly say it.

If the Democrats impeach Trump, then there will be probably 70-80 votes in the Senate to remove him from office which is more than enough.
2/3 of 100 is going to be 67 votes.

And I promise you if it came down to that, McCain would be there if they had to life flight him in on a resuscitator or in an iron lung.

I don't think the Republicans would dare go on record and sever themselves from the bulk of their base like that over this piddly garbage. Campaign finance violations? The same thing other presidential campaigns paid fines over, and were barely found worthy of mention in the press?

No, they'd destroy the party by removing its president. And themselves.

It would destroy the GOP for a generation and could shatter it completely, and they'd be perfectly fine with that.

The GOPe is far happier in the minority.

It won't be campaign finance violations. The Democrats would impeach over it, but what they're really hoping for is that Cohen will get Trump over "collusion," obstruction of justice, or something illegal in New York which is why the governor personally ordered a full investigation of the Trump foundation a few months ago. Apparently Cohen has already called the AG and governor to tell them he wants to help them do whatever is necessary. They seem to be pinning their hopes on tax and bank fraud. I suspect what we'll see is they'll start indicting his family on state charges (a President can't pardon for those), and if he'll make a deal to resign, it will all go away.

Question for the Mueller thread residents:

Regarding the FISA abuse, how do you think a pardon/commutation of sentence for Manafort and Flynn play if they were Title I FISA warrant victims? The argument being that the majority of evidence amassed against them (whether charged or not) was obtained with an improperly granted warrant? Then Trump pivots to advocating for further FISA reform.

Would the GOPers get behind that?

Agree. There are dark clouds gathering with Cohen as the star witness in New York state. But does he have much credibility left?

I think it turns on who he can really prove up was victimized. If he can show a wide case of characters from the senate that they were targeted as well, he'll get a lot of buy-in.

I think those would be fine. Media & Dems would howl, but it would go away in a week or so

It's the Cohen pardon that could potentially cause Trump issues.

Aaahh, good point. I forgot that Senators, Congress Critters and maybe some press members were also likely targeted. If their butts were affected by the abuse they would be more conducive.

Cohen is unpardonable at this point from Trump's perspective. Then he can no longer assert the 5th. Not that his lawyer, Lanny Davis cares about Cohen's legal peril.

But it is likely Cohen was also a Title I FISA warrant victim since he was named in the Steele Dossier. I'd expect Trump would say, "Here, find you some competent lawyers and get out of your plea deal based on fruit of the poisonous tree. I'll give you a get out jail free card but not a pardon. Sue your lawyers for malpractice while you're at it."

That's a joke, BTW.

I get that. What sort of legal exposure would he face though, I guess is my question. Just smells fishy to me.

That's not the history of prosecutors. They want it if it gets them someone bigger, or if it's easier to take the plea than prove the case. Truth is secondary to "wins" when reputations and big fat future partnerships and board mamberships are on the line.

Doesn't really matter if he actually faced true legal exposure if a prosecutor is saying cooperate or else. Abundance of caution would say take the immunity. Nothing to lose.

If Robert Mueller attempts to prosecute Don Jr. for lying to Congress, while James Clapper, who admitted to lying to Congress on national television, roams free......

In my opinion, we will be in a full on, out in the open, coup d'etat.

Mueller going after one of Trump's kids would be DEFCON 2, approaching DEFCON 1.

But it would almost force Trump to sit down with him, in all likelihood, from a legal strategy.
