I doubt he killed anyone before this. Two completely different types of murders....it's one thing to shoot a crowd from a distance and quite another to get up and close and kill an individual. He likely developed this sick fascination of spraying a large crowd from a distance with automatic rifles but would never consider quietly taking out a person he'd have to get up close to and watch die.
