Christians recognize Jesus as our Lord and Master, but is He our "brother" too?

Is Abraham our "father"?

Yes, Abraham means "the father of many nations", right?

Abraham is our father in faith...it's right in the liturgy.

Yes, Christ is our brother.

Rom 8:29For those God foreknew he also predestined to be conformed to the likeness of his Son, that he might be the firstborn among many brothers.

Heb 2:11-Both the one who makes men holy and those who are made holy are of the same family. So Jesus is not ashamed to call them brothers.

Mrs. Lovelight -you got it right! Jesus is our Elder brother.

Jesus is not our brother in the way (Gnostic) Mormons teach.

He is our brother because He is the firstborn of humanity. The Son of Man is Perfect Man, and we may be perfected because of Him.

Mormons believe we may achieve divinity like Christ is divine. This is Joseph Smith updating and stealing from the great nemesis of orthodoxy, Gnosticism.

Mrs. Lovelight - If that is so, then does that make Mary our Mother too?

Jesus is our brother by adoption, not by blood.

Jesus is our Elder Brother because he was the first born of all the spirit children of our Father in Heaven. We were born after Him. Mary, the mother of Jesus, is our sister. The mother and father of our "mortal bodies" are our first parents "on earth", Adam & Eve. But spiritualy, they are also our brother and sister in that that they too were begotten spirit children (as we all are) of our Father in Heaven before the world was ever formed.

73,

What the hell is the point of this? Just to pick a fight? Let people be. Mrs. Lovelight shouldn't slander Mary because she is a fine example of Christian womanhood. However, she also doesn't have to honor her the way we do unless she decides to join the Catholic church.

Mary deserves great honor. She and Eve were the two most honored and worthy spirit daughters in our premortal life. That is why they were given the responsibilies they had in their earth life. That being said, Mary has no special "in" with God nor does anyone who has ever lived on earth except Jesus Christ.

ibm, the discussion here is along orthodox theology...not new age unorthodoxy.

Ocean -There is nothing "new age unorthodoxy" in my post here. It is what the scriptures in the Old and New Testament teach.

The Hollie's song, "He Ain't Heavy, He's My Brother."

A small bit of humor injected into a serious discussion to keep us from becoming too intense.

Didn't the Hollies do:

For those who may doubt that God the Father is literally the Father of our spirits I will refer you to the following scriptures:

Num. 16:22 "And they fell upon their faces, and said, O God, the God of the SPIRITS of all flesh, shall one man sin, and wilt thou be wroth with all the congregation?"

Num. 2:16 "Let the Lord, the God of the spirits of all flesh, set a man over the congregation."

Jer. 1:4-5 "Then the word of the Lord came unto me, saying, Before I formed thee in the belly I KNEW thee; and before thou camest out of the womb I sancified thee, and I ORDAINED thee a prophet unto the nations."

Heb. 12:9 "Furthermore we have had fathers of our flesh which corrected us, and we gave them reverence: shall we not much rather be in subjection unto the FATHER of our spirits and live?"

I am sure you remember the scripture that says upon death the body turns to dust and the spirit RETURNS to God who gave it. It is impossible to return to a place you never had been. You might go there but not return.

I can't wait till I get my own planet, become a god, and get to have sex billions of time in order to populate my planet with all my spirit children. Does God ever have an issue with E.D. I would think with billions of children, it's a definite possibility.

Rab -I am glad you are looking forward to that. You have only one small problem. At this time you don't qualify; but you know what to do.

Crocker - The purpose is to show that Mary is not a "footnote" in the life of Jesus, as some have claimed. Just as Eve's no to God enabled Adam to commit original sin and condemn mankind to childbearing and the tilling of the soil, Mary's yes to God enabled Jesus to freely die on the cross and save mankind from the fires of hell. Her role as a human in salvation history is second only to that of Jesus Christ. She is the only person in the bible, besides Jesus, who declares herself blessed (Luke 1).

Some footnote...

ibm - For sure things would be different - Everyone running around naked in a garden, with no computers, no worries, not money...But, I can't verify the accuracy of your statement, because God could have created me and you in a different way....
ibmagg

73 -No, we were already alive in the spirit in Heaven. But our entry into mortality would have been delayed indefinitely. God gave Adam & Eve two commandments; to multiply and replenish the earth and not to eat of the tree of knowledge. They "trangressed". Satan thought that he had messed up God's plan to bring us into mortality but instead he made it all possible. For in a state of innocence, they would have never multiplied and replenished the earth. "Adam fell that men might be, and men are that they might have joy."

This thread reminds me of a vacation Bible school song we used to sing:

God is our Father,
and Jesus is our Brother,
and the Blessed Holy Spirit is our Guide.

The devil's no relation,
For I'm a new creation,
I'm a member of the family in the sky.

Jesus is my Son,
and the Blessed Holy Spirit is my spouse."
