Hey folks,

I've been in Houston for a little while now, but have had a difficult time finding a Protestant church that isn't a mega-church. I was raised Baptist, and I've attended various Baptist and non-denominational churches over my life. I'm looking for a Protestant church that isn't a mega-church and is more traditional in feel. I don't need smoke machines or light shows. I don't mind some "theatrics" if it gets people to attend, but the Word needs to come first. Is anyone aware of a protestant church on the NW side of Houston that feels more like a church than a concert?

A good friend of mine goes to Risen Church.

I have not been, but if I lived in the area I would check out Harvest Bible Church.

Good on you for seeking out more than the modern Christian "experience."

I appreciate the suggestions, and will definitely check both out. The .gov moved us out here, and I knew Houston was kinda mega-churchy, but I didn't realize the extent to which they have taken over. I'd never had a problem finding a church home in San Antonio, Dallas, or College Station but it's been a year and Houston is proving difficult. My beliefs are simple - that I am saved by Grace offered freely by accepting Jesus Christ as my personal savior. I have a pretty simple test to determine if a church is one I want to join - I just go up to the pastor after the service and ask "Who is the leader of the church?". You'd not believe how many tell me their executive pastor...or God forbid the Pope.

How far NW are you? I should have asked before giving you Cypress area options.

Actually in Cypress area, just S of 290. So Harvest isn't far at all.

Cool! I'd be curious to hear more of your journey to find a church home and where you land if you ever get the desire to share. I grew up in the area, so always curious about solid churches in the area that are not of the mega variety. Have been trying to encourage my dad to find a church home as well.

Need to edit my initial response.

Buddy I know used to go to Risen but he actually ended up at Redeemer Church in Tomball.

My parents and sister attend Grace Community Bible Church. They love it. Small church and focus is on expository preaching.

I'll plug my church.

I go to Fairfield Baptist at 290 near Mueske. The congregation is roughly 500 people each week. The church is focused on making disciples, we do Sunday school and midweek Life Groups.

Would Houston NW Church be an option? I don't really know the size (like what you consider to be "mega"), but I know the senior pastor and can vouch for him.

Absolutely, everything is an option. I've tried a number of what I thought were Baptist churches, for example Second Baptist in Cypress. I've found a direct correlation between size of congregation and caring more about the performance of the service than the congregation understanding the Word.

I imagine Houston NW will be potentially similar to Second Baptist. But I could be wrong.

I know you're leaning away towards a mega-church, but man do we love Houston's First Baptist in Bridgeland. Great community! Best of luck to finding a church! Also have heard great things about CyLife and Bayou City Fellowship in Tomball.

We would agree on many points about the main service, but Second has lots of options for Bible Study classes.

I appreciate the feedback even knowing I had a dissenting opinion. I am by no means holier than anyone or anything, and at the end of the day it's more about me being more like the Church than the Church being catered to me. It is a double edged sword. With big churches come community, and that shouldn't be understated.

I would try Harvest or Cypress Bible Church.

Both non denominational and stick to verse by verse preaching style which I found out I needed in my life.

I think their senior pastor started a little Bible study in College Station.

I have a lot of friends who attend Houstons First/Cypress and love it!
