Been following what's on the news about Robert Morris and Gateway Church?

Yep. Really creepy stuff. Guy should be in prison. A moral failing is visiting a strip club, or using porn, or abusing alcohol or drugs, it isn't molesting the daughter or a member of the congregation numerous times over a period of years.

The girls dad should have beaten the guy to a pulp.

Quote:

"When I was in my early twenties, I was involved in inappropriate sexual behavior with a young lady in a home where I was staying. It was kissing and petting and not intercourse, but it was wrong. This behavior happened on several occasions over the next few years," the pastor said in his statement.

"In March of 1987, this situation was brought to light, and it was confessed and repented of. I submitted myself to the Elders of Shady Grove Church and the young lady's father. They asked me to step out of ministry and receive counseling and freedom ministry, which I did. Since that time, I have walked in purity and accountability in this area," Morris said in his statement, adding he and his wife met with the survivor and her family in 1989.

"I asked their forgiveness, and they graciously forgave me," he said.

If the girl was indeed 12 at the time. shame on everyone in Grand Prairie for sweeping under the rug sexual abuse of a minor.

The even stranger part is that Gateway had to preempt an address by Andrew Tate to share the news.

Tate had just been booted from his California church for sexual harassments and infidelity and the board of that church had gotten crossways with its congregation and staff trying to cover it all up.

Looks like the church hired a firm to investigate and confessed they were unaware of victim's age or duration. Good for them if that is all true.

I hope it is, but I'm having a hard time believing they didn't know more than they're admitting.

I think this far down the line it's entirely possible that those who are on the board now weren't then, even if they were handpicked by him. I'm not a gateway fan or defender either, but 30 years is a lot of time.

This story has gone national. It's all over everything, and the more the big pubs dig, the creepier it gets. Don't be surprised if more women come forward in the coming days.

Christians need to wake up. We've got wolves all around. I'm trying to find anything that remotely makes this man qualified to pastor a church. Beyond that, his son and daughter in law also hold pastoral titles and I see no qualifications or training for them either. Correct me if I'm wrong…

Saul killed Christians for fun, and then one day encountered Jesus and his life and name changed.

According to you Paul wasnt qualified to pastor either

I don't seem to recall that part of the bible where Paul hid the worst part of his story and obfuscated the truth until he was forced to step down. By the way, no one is saying he can't be forgiven or that there is not mercy for everyone, but this is also a criminal matter. Knowing what you know now, that you did not know a week ago, would you leave your daughter alone with this man? Therefore, would you want him in the pulpit of your church?

Paul was absolutely qualified once Christ woke him up on the road to Damascus and gave him eyes to see the truth.

My point is that is seems like Robert and almost his entire staff have no meaningful training (seminary, etc). It seems like this is a growing trend in today's churches. There is little seriousness around the rigorous training of the men who are leading the sheep; all that matters is that Pastors are cool and funny when delivering a watered down sermon. Why are people OK with this?

Saul's name never changed. He just had a Romanized name, like many others of the time (was Saul, also called Paul just like John, also called Mark). Saul's "name change" is a great example of the Mandela effect.

Typical response from an American evangelical. Immediately sides with the abuser because he's a "spiritual authority" and the child he abused is just a faceless woman.

The difference is pretty clear. Paul completely repented, owned the sin, and changed his life.

Contrast that with Morris who avoided any kind of legal punishment, lied about the true facts of this case (the girls age) for decades, tried to get her to sign an NDA in the mid 2010s, and even this week referred to her publicly as a "young lady" instead of a 12 year old child that he sexually assaulted as a married, adult pastor.

This behavior is not the sign of someone who has repented. It's shows a man who tried to run from and hide his sin for 40 years, all while enriching himself to the tune of tens of millions of dollars and worldwide fame. Why anyone would view him as a spiritual authority at this point boggles the mind.

Frankly, it says a lot about you if your knee jerk reaction is to go to bat for Robert Morris. This is nothing but enabling and is the reason why he was able to avoid the chickens coming home to roost for so long.

A person who does something like this may be forgiven, and may even become a saint. But they should not a priest or pastor.

Saul did those things prior to his conversion. He was born again and started a life of ministry.

Robert Morris raped a little girl as a minister and was named an elder within 3 years of the end of the abuse.

The Bible is very clear on this. Rober Morris is not fit to lead a church.

A shepherd is:

Above reproach
Self controlled
Respectable
Not violent
Must be well thought of by outsiders so as not to fall into disgrace
Not open to the charge of debauchery
Self-controlled
Upright
Holy
Disciplined
Not domineering over those in their charge

Pretty cut and dry. No defense for him being in church leadership. He can be restored to the body of Christ, but not to the ministry.

And he should be rotting in prison.

Have all the facts been put on the table, or do you just default to believing all women, all the time, regardless of length of time between today and supposed event?

I graduated in 87, the same time frame that this woman is saying this happened to her. Why did she wait 37 years? What's her motivation?

The articles I've read indicate that she did not wait 37 years. She told her dad and family, who confronted folks in authority. When they were ignored/dismissed by the folks in authority, the father "washed his hands" of the entire situation.

Who knows what the woman has done in the last 37 years or why this story reached prominence now. Does it really matter? Morris admits that her allegations are true.

She has come forward before. In 2005 for instance. The church offered her hush money.

It's not too late to delete your post...seriously.

The person speaking up is credible, she's openly discussing, tried to report this several times in different ways. The church tried to pay her off and asked her to sign an NDA.

STOP BLAMING THE VICTIM!!!

She didn't. Morris admitted to the abuse decades ago. What wasn't known was that the girl he was a abusing was a child. Morris had led people to believe it was a "young woman" and tried to get her to sign an NDA a decade or so back for $25k.

There's a difference in a traveling evangelist and a pastor shepherding a church.
Jabin

If you read the article, you would have noted that Morris was a traveling evangelist when he molested the little girl.

I did, and you're correct.

I was saying Paul, in his multiple journeys, was in a different role (traveling & evangelizing) than RM is shepherding Gateway.

People can be very formidable evangelists due to their background and ability to relate and give testimony. But that background can disqualify them from the role of pastor.

I'd argue that the troubled background makes traveling evangelists uniquely qualified to convert people. They're more approachable and relatable. Pastors can often seem stiff and difficult to reach.

But as you said, the same qualifications that make a traveling evangelist good also make a bad setup as a pastor.
