Since Jesus came to earth and He is the way to God; did Jews lose their ability to pray to God? Does God still hear and answer their prayers if they don't believe in Jesus?

I am going to answer this question with a question and from that question you will have an answer. Did God answer the prayer of the Righteous Remnant (which was made up entirely of what you call Jews) by the river Kebar?

God is omniscient so He hears all prayers.

Scripture is clear that Jesus is the only way to God.

I have no idea whether He answers prayers from non believers as God can do what He wants.

I agree. But you still hear the prayer correct? You just might not answer it.

Yes, but saying God "hears all prayers" doesn't answer the OP. God "hearing" a prayer is not about him being aware that it exists. Asking him to "incline his ear" is not a request for him to turn his hearing aid up.

I've been on church mass email lists, and it doesn't seem like God is being super attentive and indulgent when it comes to answering Christian prayers.

More directly, surely God hears all prayers. Balaam wasn't Hebrew or part of Israel but God heard his prayers. Job also was not an Israelite but he was apparently God's favorite. But even good, honest, appropriate prayers for life, love, and hope are rarely answered.

Luke 4:25-34 "Listen to me: it is true that there were many widows in Israel during the time of Elijah, when there was no rain for 3.5 years and a severe famine spread throughout the whole land. Yet Elijah was not sent to anyone in Israel, but only to a widow living in Zarephath in the territory of Sidon. And there were many people suffering from a dreaded skin disease who lived in Israel during the time of the prophet Elisha; yet not one of them was healed, but only Naaman the Syrian."

What's that go to do with the topic? You said your children vs child that doesn't belong to me. That implied to me that some humans are not God's children.

"The Lord is close to everyone who calls out to him, to all who call out to him sincerely." (Psalm 145:18)

It doesn't say anything about having to accept Jesus.

He has one begotten son. He has as many adopted sons and daughtees as have been baptized into the mystical body of Christ. The status of an adopted son or daughter as that term is used in the NT is not just a legal relationship. It's true, familial intergration.

Proverbs says "the prayer of a righteous man availeth much" but pretty sure a prayer of repentance by any unbeliever, whether Jew or Gentile, is heard.

Not to mention year 0 AD didn't exist! It's like a divide by zero fail, but with dates

I think He probably does. Was reading in Isaiah the tiger day where God uses a foreign king and says "you don't know Me but I know you." So He is involved in their life. He also says He hears the cries of the orphans and widows. That doesn't seem exclusive. There are some God does not seem to hear, the proud who He opposes probably be one.

You used the word "heresy" not I. And you have not addressed any part of my point. God clearly appeared to people before any postmodern church was founded and he also appeared to people and talked to them prior to any incarnation.

Here is short list of some answered prayers:

  • Abraham's prayer for Lot and the cities of Sodom and Gomorrah (Genesis 18:22-23)
  • Hannah's prayer of praise and thanksgiving for her son Samuel (1 Samuel 2:1-10)
  • Moses' prayer of intercession for the Israelites and request for God's presence (Exodus 33:12-23)
  • Hezekiah's prayer of faith and desperation for God's help against the Assyrians (2 Kings 19:14-19)

None of these people knew who Jesus was. Some knew the angel of the Lord. But they did not know Him as Jesus and he did not die to save them. The angel forgave sins.

I mean, in general, what is prayer for anyway?

Prayer is primarily for yourself to grow closer to God. God knows everything you could possibly need, want or desire better than you yourself know it. You work on your own salvation (in part) through praying for others and yourself. You also become better at praying in ways that reflect God's nature through studying prayers or praying prayers of the church fathers. So learning to pray properly towards God is an implicit obligation of the church.

Prayer is not a christmas wish list, or an IT ticket service.

I think God hears all prayers. Answering prayers is an entirely different question and not even really a proper way of phrasing it.

For example, My wife and I have increased our prayer life by an order of magnitude over the last twoish years. We pray nightly together as a family, read prayers from the church fathers and prayers formally in the liturgicon, we try attend midweek services and default place on sunday morning is church regardless of work or extended family obligations.

Have my prayers gotten better about asking for the right things? Yes.
Has God answered my prayers? Yes.
Did God actually answer them by responding to the prayers in a line item form? No.
Did God remove hardships from our life? No, actually we have gone through more.
Has God increased our joy while going through those hardships? Yes.

Great post and agree. I use the Anglican book of common prayer daily and spend quite of bit of time getting quiet and listening to God. I think prayer helps us get aligned with God's plans for our lives.

I just texted my pastor of many years and said I never dreamed I would enjoy praying so much.

Both in the same sense? That's illogical. Orthodox love to equivocate in the name of being "mysterious" as seen on this thread.
